Museum hosts textile arts exhibit The Mahwah Museum will host “Homespun History: Quilts, Coverlets and Fabric Arts” through June 30. Originally mounted for the Northwest Bergen History Day, the exhibit focuses on the development of textile arts from the colonial period through the late 1800s. The exhibit highlights changes and advances, such as the introduction of affordable fabrics, the use of the Jacquard loom, and the introduction of the sewing machine in the mid 1800s. Some of the textiles featured in the quilt display will be a “friendship” or “autograph” quilt made in 1856 at Ramapo Reformed Church by friends of Anna E. Winter to celebrate her engagement to Dr. Albert Zabriskie. Patchwork or “crazy” quilts will also be on display, as will a coverlet made for Lavina Hopper in 1837. Other fabric arts on display include 1870s bonnets, rural feed sack clothing, a linsey-woolsey blanket, and an intricate bodice with stays. Buttons, sewing implements, and exquisite examples of lace will also be on display. The museum’s exhibits also include “Les Paul in Mahwah,” “Nike Base in Mahwah,” and “The Donald Cooper Railroad.” Hours are Wednesdays and weekends from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults.
