Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • May 29, 2013 At press time, the Midland Park Varsity Girls Softball Team was scheduled to play Sussex Tech in their quest for a state championship. Earlier in the week, the second seeded Panthers improved their record to 25-2 with a 10-0 five-inning victory over WoodRidge in the first round of the Group 1, Section 1 State Championship. Sophomore Katie Kontos continued her dominance on the mound, firing a three-hit shutout. The Panthers, who banged out nine hits in five innings, were paced by junior Amanda Parker and sophomore Brianna Lelinho, who both had three RBI. Seniors Michelle Passero and Gaby Spatucci each contributed RBI and added two hits each, while senior Tori Bell (RBI), junior Katie Lelinho (RBI), and freshman Julie Carey all pitched in with one hit. Until May 18, the Panthers had a 19game winning streak. That ended with a 5-1 loss to Mahwah in the quarterfinals of the Bergen County Tournament. The Panthers could only muster five hits against the surging Mahwah team. Gabby Spatucci and Julie Carey each had a double while Michelle Passero, Briana Lelinho, and Katie Kontos each had one hit apiece. The team went on to capture the Patriot Division League Championship with a 15- Varsity Softball Team makes state competition 1 league record when the girls won against Emerson 10-2. Kontos pitched a complete game and helped her cause with two RBI. Passero had four singles, while Amanda Parker chipped in with three hits and two RBI. The Panthers banged out an impressive 15 hits. In other sports news, the Bergen County Track & Field Championships were held at Old Tappan High School recently. Girls’ Varsity Team member Lisa Carle took first place in the high jump, second place in the 100 high hurdles, and fifth place in the 200 meter. Kim Rabeiro placed second in the long jump, and Melissa Terpstra took third place with the javelin and sixth with the shot put. The Boys’ Varsity Track Team placed third overall in the competition. Seth Zuidema took first place in the javelin, and second in the discus. His cousin Arie Zuidema scored first place in the discus, and placed third in the shot put. Tyree Lee placed third in the 100 meter race, and sixth in the long jump. Jason DeLac placed fifth in the 200 meter race, and Matt Ganguza placed fourth in the 110 high hurdles. Robby Greer won second place for the high jump, and Harrison DeKnight took the fourth place award.
