Wong wins Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition
Ridgewood harpist Katy Wong has won the Don Bosco 2013 Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition and the related $1,000 monetary award. Wong was one of 13 finalists who performed for the last concert of Don Bosco Prep’s 2012-13 Chapel Concert season. This Ridgewood High School sophomore is studying with Kirsten Agresta. She has also won first place in the Emerging Artists Division of the Young Artist’s Harp Competition in Rabun Gap, Georgia and was awarded third place in the 2013 Passion of Music event. She was the principal harpist for the New Jersey All State Wind Ensemble and New Jersey All State Orchestra. Currently, she is the harpist for the New York Youth Symphony. Wong has also won numerous competitions for her piano playing. She is a board member in the Tri-M National Honor Music Society, through which she shares both talents with senior citizens at the Van Dyk Manor. Wong has given back to her community by playing at fundraisers for Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare and West Bergen Mental Healthcare. Waldwick, Bart Lasecki from Montvale, marimba player Neil McNulty from Randolph, bari-tenor William Martorano from Washington Township, pianist Charlie Mezzini from Washington Township, classical guitarist Nicholas Giordano from Oakland, soprano Kristina Walz from Ramsey, pianist Michelle Yan from Hillsdale, and soprano Michelle Zink from Wyckoff. Judged by a panel of experts on talent, technique, musicianship, skill, interpretation, presentation, and presence, the finalists competed against a standard of excellence. Judges included Don Bosco Band Director Gaetano Cecere, Don Bosco Choral and Concert Director Toni Bilotti Cecere, Saint John the Baptist (Hillsdale) Music Director and concert organist Kristin Dabaghian, flutist Patricia Lazzara, Don Bosco alumnus Christopher Caphoneand, and Broadway actor Gay Willis. This is the third year Don Bosco Prep has held its Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition, which was established to recognize the talent, commitment, and discipline of young artists. The competition is open to high school artists throughout New Jersey. Founded in 1915, Don Bosco Prep is a private, Catholic college preparatory high school for young men. The school is located in Ramsey.
