Ramsey May 22, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 7 Ramsey High School senior Nicole Martinez recently had her sculpture, “Strength and Beauty,” accepted to Martinez sculpture accepted to statewide exhibit “Art, Innovation, and Ideas,” the 2013 The College of New Jersey art exhibit. K-12 students from across the state applied to this exhibit, and final selections were made based on the overall quality and innovative design of the artwork. The exhibit is intended to highlight innovative art making that connects student learning and art to the real world, academic subjects, social issues, big ideas, and/or contemporary art. This project was supported and inspired by art teacher Kelly Bonaldi and other art faculty’s participation in Project ABLE, which helps teachers push their lesson design beyond normal boundaries in order to allow students have more authentic learning experiences. For this project, students used creative thinking skills and problem solving skills to determine how to successfully design their work; build an appropriate armature; and create descriptive volume, texture, relief, and color; all while maintaining an eye for creating an overall mood and theme. Students were also required to incorporate at least one repurposed innovative material of their choosing. Martinez’s artwork will be on display at TCNJ during the month of June and will be juried by a distinguished panel of artists and educators, including Faith Ringgold.
