This 90-minute, multimedia program covers the history of Versailles Palace and music composed there from 1635 through the French Revolution. Originally a hunting lodge for Louis XIII, Versailles evolved into a palace widely imitated throughout Europe. The program will feature music by Lully, Rameau,
Couperin, Mozart, and Gluck with authentic instruments. A documentary video shows the “Sun King,” Louis XIV, walking through his new Hall of Mirrors, and his vast gardens with fountains. The program includes footage of the private rooms of Marie Antoinette, which are not shown on public tours, and a virtual visit to the Royal Chapel of Versailles. Sprague studied music at Mount Holyoke College and Indiana University and took piano classes with Russian master Malvina Potop. On May 29, Rick Feingold will present a program on the Shelburn Line, a World War II escape network in occupied France that returned 136 allied servicemen to England. The French Resistance located downed airmen and hid them from the Nazis using a series of safe-houses. Once a month -- during dark of the moon -- the men were transported to the Brittany coast to meet a motor gun boat that would return them to England. Feingold, a travel writer for Boston Herald and Christian Science Monitor, will recount the story of how his father escaped from behind enemy lines. “Operation Bonaparte” tells the story of Lt. Louis Feingold, a B-17 U.S. Army Air Corp navigator, who escaped Nazi capture. Lt. Feingold flew 20 bombing missions with the United States Air Corps during World War II. During a dogfight with seven Nazi fighters, his plane was shot down over occupied France. Feingold’s escape story is told using letters, maps, photos, and the original fake identity cards. Crossroads
(continued from page 5) of the residents’ committee, advised that his group hopes to eliminate the two big-box stores and to reduce the theater to a two-plex in order to minimize the impact the mall might have on traffic. He said the developer only offered to plant some trees behind the big-box store buildings. Jaworski said his client offered to plant $50,000 worth of landscaping behind the two big-box store buildings to shield their view from residential properties on the other side of the adjacent Ramapo River, but the demands of the residents’ committee did not fit his client’s business plan. He said that, if their demands were granted, they would represent a significant change to the plans, which would not comply with the zoning ordinance now in effect for the property. Jaworski confirmed that, if Judge Carver rules there was a conflict of interest and nullifies the rezoning ordinance, his client will appeal that decision to the Appellate Division of Superior Court. If the judge dismisses the conflict of interest case against Crossroads, the public hearing of the plans currently before the planning board will continue. However, if Carver invalidates the ordinance that rescinded the original rezoning ordinance, that would open up the possibility of making changes to the plans such as the potential purchase of the Suburban Propane property to provide a better access to the retail mall. Fede said he attended the settlement conferences mostly as an observer because the township would not consider any action until and unless there was a settlement agreement between the residents’ committee and the developer. In addition, he explained that any action the council might take would depend on the specifics of any settlement.
