Annual Fishing Contest set Mahwah Recreation will host its 24th Annual Fishing Contest on Saturday, May 25. The event will be held at 10 a.m. at Silver Creek Pond, located at the intersection of Airmont Avenue and Airmount Road. This catch and release contest is open to Mahwah residents ages five through 13. Proof of residency is required at registration. Prizes will be awarded. The event will take place rain or shine. Broadway coming to Mahwah The Mahwah High School Drama Club will present “Broadway Comes to Mahwah” on Thursday, May 16. Written and directed by students, this revue features songs and dances from a variety of Broadway shows. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the high school located at 50 Ridge Road. The evening will include a special auction with a variety of prizes including four VIP tickets to a Yankee game, a custom cake or cupcakes for 75 from Cakes by Barbra, local restaurant dining certificates, a glam makeover and fashion consultation for 10 at Lord & Taylor, an annual family membership to the Museum of Modern History, and more. Library hosts Movie Series The Mahwah Pubic Library, located at 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah, presents weekly movies on Thursdays afternoons at 1:30 p.m. These films are free. Popcorn and a drink are provided. No tickets are necessary. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. Several 2012 films will be presented in May. “The Impossible” (PG-13, 114 minutes) will be featured on May 16. This film is an account of a family caught with tens of thousands of strangers in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time, the tsunami in Thailand. The film stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. See “Hyde Park on Hudson” (R, 94 minutes) on May 23. The film involves the love affair between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley one weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited New York. The film stars Bill Murray, Laura Linney, and Olivia Williams. It is rated R for brief sexuality. A screening of “Silver Linings Playbook” (R, 122 minutes) is set for May 30. After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert DiNero, and is rated R for language and some sexual content and nudity. The Mahwah Public Library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Housing coalition counselor to speak The Bergen County Housing Coalition will send a representative to the Mahwah Senior Center on May 16 to discuss tenants’ rights. The program will begin at noon and the $2 donation covers lunch. Call the center to reserve a seat. The coalition provides legal guidance and case service in matters of landlord-tenant law to low- and moderateincome residents of Bergen County. Clients involved in landlord-tenant disputes are counseled and informed of their rights and responsibilities under New Jersey law, local rent control ordinances, state and local property maintenance codes, and other applicable statutes. Everyday Heroes to be recognized On May 20, the Mahwah High School Community Problem Solving Team, known as Open Your Heart, will hold an Everyday Heroes Ceremony in the school auditorium at 7 p.m. Over 25 individuals will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community. Students will share an original video on what makes an “Everyday Hero.” After the ceremony, guests are invited to enjoy free refreshments with the honorees. The event is free of charge. Congratulations to The Village School students Teddy O’Brien from Ho-Ho-Kus and Frazer McMath from Mahwah who were selected to participate in this year’s New Jersey Elementary and Junior High Honor Choirs. Hundreds of students from all over New Jersey auditioned to be part of this year’s Choral Festival for outstanding vocalists in grades four through nine. O’Brien and McMath enjoyed singing with the 120 person chorus and learning from acclaimed choral directors.
Church sets Bargain Bonanza, Bible Camp The Ramapo Reformed Church, located at 100 Island Road in Mahwah, is seeking donations for its Bargain Bonanza, which will be held June 14 and 15. This sale will feature a bounty of yard, garage, and vintage treasures for shoppers of all ages. Items for the sale may be donated Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the church office. The church will hold its Vacation Bible School, “God’s Backyard Bible Camp,” July 29 through Aug. 2. The camp is open to children ages three through 12. Activities will take place under tents behind the parsonage. The program
