Petrov Ballet School will hold its Fifth Annual Spring Gala May 18 at 7 p.m. and May 19 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The gala will feature the studio’s ballet and character students and professional guest artists. All performances will be held in the Sharp Theater in the Berrie Center for the Arts at Ramapo College, 505 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah. This year’s gala performance will include “Vivaldi Concertos,” an original ballet; “The Wizard of Oz,” a ballet for younger children depicting a famous story; and character dances. A number of guest artists associated with professional ballet companies will be performing alongside the pupils from Petrov Ballet School. This combination of professionalism and young talent on the rise makes the Petrov Ballet Gala a must-see experience. Petrov Ballet’s advanced students will perform “Vivaldi Concertos,” which features Antonio Vivaldi’s compositions and choreography by Petrov Ballet School Artistic Director Eugene Petrov. “Wizard of Oz, which premiered in 2005,” was also choreographed by Petrov. This segment depicts this well-loved story with all its famous characters. This year, the performance will be enhanced by new sets and lighting design. Performing alongside Petrov Ballet’s students will be professional guest artists Raul Peinado, Alfredo Solivan, and Alexander Glaz, who will portray the energetic Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion. Returning to Petrov Ballet for a second year is Therese Miyoshi Wendler, who will perform as Dorothy. Also featured will be Petrov Ballet School’s signature Character Dances Divertissement. This year’s performance will include breathtaking Mountain Dervish, Hora Tov, an Israeli folk dance, and a fast-moving, energetic Belorussian dance, Mikita. Tickets are $30.
