Church announces May events The First Presbyterian Church of Ramsey, located at 15 Shuart Lane, has announced its May events. The church will hold a Mother’s Day Plant Sale on May 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the back parking lot. On May 12, a Special Mother’s Day program with the children’s, youth, and men’s choirs will be held at the 10 a.m. service. Friends and families are invited to raft on the Delaware on Saturday, May 18. This nine-mile trip takes approximately four hours. The cost is $48 per person. The Literary Ladies book discussion group will meet at 10 a.m. on May 29 to discuss Elizabeth Strout’s “The Burgess Boys.” Based in Maine, this story explores the sibling relationships of a family and their differing ways of dealing with an earlier tragedy. This tale concerns a lighthouse keeper and his wife who take in a baby who washes up on their shore. These compelling characters seek to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer, and justice for one person is another’s tragic loss. Rummage Sale set Saint John’s Memorial Episcopal Church, located on the corner of Main Street and Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey, will hold a Rummage Sale May 10 and 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. The sale will include clothing for the entire family, shoes and accessories, toys, miscellaneous kitchen and household items, linens, decorations, and much more. Ramsey High School guidance intern Megan O’Neill coordinated a Community Service Fair that was held at Ramsey High School. Members of various Bergen County organizations presented information about their services. This initiative allowed students to learn about volunteer opportunities. The following organizations were represented: Community Volunteer Services, Ramsey Free Public Library, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, YWCA of Ridgewood, Valley Hospital, Community Blood Services, Ramsey Ambulance Corps, Ramsey Fire Department, Care Plus, Huntington’s Disease Society of America, and Valley Home Care and Hospice. Cultivating volunteers
Churches host directed retreat The Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will co-sponsor a directed retreat with Saint Paul’s Church of Ramsey during the week of May 11 through 18. The retreat will begin and end with a group meeting on May 11 and 18 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. At the first meeting, there will be a 15-minute simulation of a spiritual direction session. During the week, Monday through Friday, each person will meet with his or her spiritual director privately for 30 minutes daily at a mutually convenient time. Participants will be asked to spend at least 30 minutes in prayer each day. There is no charge, but a freewill offering may

Leisure Club to visit Botanical Gardens The Ramsey Leisure Club will host a bus trip to the New York Botanical Gardens on June 27. Following the garden visit, the group will lunch at Amelia’s Restaurant on Arthur Avenue. The cost is $59 for members and $64 for non members. For reservations, call Fran Mahon at (201) 995-9486. Ramsey residents who are over the age of 55 are invited to attend Leisure Club meetings. Sessions are held at 11 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the Lutheran Church. The next meeting is scheduled for May 14.
