A memorial service will be held at West Side Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. Barbara Harris, nee Maass, of Melbourne, Florida, formerly of Ridgewood, died March 29. She was 81. After attending Duke University, she worked as a stewardess for Eastern Airlines. She had been a volunteer at the local hospital for many years. She is survived by her children Leslie A. Duvall of Fredericksburg, Virginia, William Shaw Blalock of Deland, Florida, and Elizabeth Hill O’Connor of Chattanooga, Tennessee, eight grandchildren, and her brother William Maass of Chester, Vermont. She was predeceased by her husband Eugene Harris. Albert George Koch of Woodcliff Lake, formerly of Ramsey, Hillsdale, and Florida, died April 16. He was 94. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had worked at Bergen County Saw Works in Bergenfield for 37 years. He is survived by his children Judith and Albert, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Doris and his former wife Dorathea. He was predeceased by his parents Rose and Albert, and his sisters Helen, Ann, and Marie. Arrangements were made by the Fred Hunter Funeral Home in Florida. Robert O. Kohler of Wyckoff, formerly of Glen Rock, died April 20. He was 96. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He attended New York University where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees. He was employed by Greff Fabrics where he worked as an inside salesman, a representative to customers in Eastern Canada, and as the New Jersey sales representative. He was a member of CBI (China, Burma, India) Vets and the Burma Star, the British equivalent of America’s CBI group. He was commander of the Garden State Basha for two years, a member of Fidelity F&AM #113, and past high priest of Chapter 49 Royal Arch Masons. He is survived by his two sons, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Marion. Arrangements were made by Browning-Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne. Anne O’Brien, nee Blome, of Allendale, formerly of Waldwick and Warwick, New York, died April 21. She was 87. Before retiring in 1989, she was a secretary at Ramsey High School. She had been a member of the Waldwick United Methodist Church and a member of the Ruth Circle. She was a member of the Warwick United Methodist Church in New York. She is survived by her children David O’Brien of Montclair and Kathleen O’Brien Shannon of Warwick, New York, four grandchildren, and her sister, Mary (“Mickey”) Stremme of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Ruth Slezak, nee Wyckoff, of Pompton Plains, formerly of Teaneck and Saddle River, died April 19. She was 72. She graduated from Bernards High School and attended Saint Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Joseph’s College in Maine and became an R.N. For 19 years she was a nurse and supervisor at the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat in Wyckoff. She was a member of Emerson Bible Church. She is survived by her children Nancy Adriance of Bergenfield, Martha Slezak of Tenafly, Kathy Slezak of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Bob Slezak of Grayson, Georgia, and Patty Slezak of Ringwood. Stein of Glen Rock died April 24. She was 85. Before retiring, she was employed with Amica Insurance Company for 35 years. She was a founding member of Temple Israel in Ridgewood. Thornton of Franklin Lakes died April 22. He was 83. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Before retiring in 1987, he was an executive with IBM for 32 years. He was a member of Arcola Country Club in Paramus, and a former member of the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes. He had been a volunteer at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood for many years. He is survived by his wife, Gayle (nee Hixson) of Franklin Lakes, his children Robert L. Thornton Jr. of San Francisco and Gay Doherty of Chatham, and three grandsons. He is also survived by his sister Helen Coleman of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and his aunt Martha Chism of Birmingham, Alabama. He was predeceased by his sister Bettye Stage. Richard A. “Dick” Bockhorn of Ramsey died April 20. He was 83. He was a veteran of the National Guard in Teaneck. He owned and operated gas stations in Ramsey, Ridgewood, and Franklin Lakes. He was a member of the Ramsey Fire Department for 55 years. He is survived by his wife JoAnne, his children Craig, Judi Jewett, and Wayne, and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brotherin-law and friend Jerry Ando, and his nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey. He is survived by his wife Joan, his children Damion, Andrea, Brandon, and Colton, one granddaughter, and his siblings Sue Marshall, Ray, Patricia Pesanello, Jim, Tom, and Kathy. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Rose Fernandez of Wyckoff died April 18. She was 90. Along with her husband, she owned Wyckoff Florist and Gifts for over 40 years. She was a member of the board of directors for the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber annually presents the Rose M. Fernandez Scholarship Award to a high school senior. She was a member of the Wyckoff Lions Club, the Wyckoff/Midland Park Rotary Club, and a member of the board of directors for the Wyckoff YMCA. She was a parishioner of the Church of Saint Elizabeth in Wyckoff, where she was a Eucharistic minister, and a member of the Liturgy Committee and of the Rosary Society. She was an assistant professor of foods and nutrition at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, and taught horticulture at Bergen Community College. In 2000, she was named the Wyckoff YMCA’s Woman of the Year. She is survived by her sons, Joseph Fernandez of Oakland and James Fernandez of Midland Park, and five grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Rae LaMagna, sister-in-law Frances Salerno, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, her sons John and William, and her brother James Salerno. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. William Francis Haase of Wyckoff, formerly of Ridgewood, died April 24. He was 86. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
