On April 1, Deborah Brown, professor emerita of Asian studies at Seton Hall University, will present a lecture on Christianity in China. This spring education event will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Brown will discuss how religions that were earlier suppressed began to be resurrected in the Peoples’ Republic of China in the early 1980s. Now, internal government data suggest that 10 percent of China’s population of over 1.3 billion self-identifies as Christian -- a percentage that continues to build and could have significant political implications. The lecture will stress two themes: historical developments that have shaped Christianity in China, and socio-political events that colored the perceptions and attitudes of Chinese authorities toward Christianity, and that continue to influence official policies and practices affecting China’s present-day Protestants and Catholics.
