Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney announced last week that the department will hold a Grand Opening of its new communication center on Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. The center, which is located within police headquarters at 25 North Central Avenue, will be dedicated to former Ramsey Police Chief Norman R. Stegen. Gurney explained that Chief Stegen was instrumental in ushering the computer age into Ramsey’s law enforcement agency in the 1970s. According to Gurney, Stegen helped acquire the first Bergen County computer for Ramsey, which helped the members of the borough’s department run their own license plate checks. Gurney said Ramsey was one of the first police departments in Bergen County to receive a com-

puter for this purpose. Before the use of computers became commonplace in police work, Gurney said police officers had to call the state police to check license plates. Today, computers known as mobile data terminals are included in most police cars. Chief Stegen is the oldest living Ramsey police officer. When he retired in 1978, he had logged 16 years with the department – the longest term served by any Ramsey police chief. After his retirement from Ramsey’s police department, Stegen worked for Bergen County.
