June 26, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 17 Mahwah Challenge (continued from page 5) During the public hearing before the zoning board, Andy Norin, the attorney for the trail conference, advised that his client had obtained an exemption from the Highlands Council since the property is located in the township’s preservation zone. Twentyseven parking spaces will be provided on site. Additional parking will be available at the nearby Ramapo Reservation and either at the adjacent Continental Soldiers Park to the north by way of a boardwalk through the woods and a bridge over the Darlington Brook, or at the parking lot at Ramapo College if Bergen County installs sidewalks along Ramapo Valley Road. Some of the renovation work already completed at the schoolhouse includes the replacement of the cedar shingles and the glass in the windows. There are further architectural plans for the building’s interior. The trail conference and the Township of Mahwah became joint owners of the Darlington Schoolhouse in November 2007 having acquired the building with the support of the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program. The building was purchased from the Morris Land Conservancy, which had acquired the schoolhouse from a private owner. Part of the cost of preserving the building is being covered by matching grants from the Bergen County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and the state’s Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund. Anyone interested in becoming a campaign volunteer to help meet the Bolger Challenge or to make a pledge, may call the trail conference at (201) 5129348. Crossover memorialized Mahwah Cub Scout Pack 258 held its 2013 Tiger Crossover at Ramapo Reservation. Congratulations to the Boy Scouts from Den 1 and Den 10.
