Five Ramsey High School students received Metro Awards for their performances in the school’s spring musical, “Crazy for You.” The awards were presented this month at the Metropolitan High School Theater Awards, sponsored by The Helen Hayes Youth Theater of Nyack, New York. The honorees included Kristina Walz, who won the trophy for Outstanding Vocal Performance; Eileen O’Connor, who won the trophy for Outstanding Featured Performance; and Tommy Barbara, Nicholas Venturini, and Joshua Bialkin, who won the trophy for Outstanding Ensemble. The awards honor the best performance and technical theater from participating high school musicals from Rockland, Westchester, and Bergen counties. This year’s RHS Drama Club production received 18 Metro Award nominations.
Performers win Metro Awards for spring show
Members of Ramsey’s cast and technical staff had nominees in each of the top categories, including actor and actress in a leading role, actor and actress in a supporting role, outstanding chorus, direction, choreography, and outstanding overall production. Each year, 40 schools enter the awards competition. Judges attend each high school production and evaluate the performance based on dozens of criteria in 27 categories. Productions are evaluated on everything from lobby displays to costumes and overall production. The judges’ ballots are then tabulated to determine the nominees, and the entire process culminates in the award ceremony at the Paramount. The RHS “Crazy for You” cast, crew, and technical staff members were invited to perform a number from the show during the awards program.
