June 19, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 17 Mahwah Minutes Author presents reading and book signing Christina Baker Kline, author of “Orphan Train: A Novel” will present a reading, book signing, and a short history of the Orphan Train on June 24 at the Mahwah Public Library. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Between 1854 and 1929, orphan trains ran regularly from East Coast cities to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by luck or chance. The book follows two women as they search for a sense of home. Kline is a novelist, nonfiction writer, and editor. In addition to “Bird in Hand,” her novels include “The Way Life Should Be,” “Desire Lines,” and “Sweet Water.” She is writer-in-residence at Fordham University and an onstaff editor and writing coach at the social networking site SheWrites.com. Kline is coeditor, with Anne Burt, of a collection of personal essays called “About Face: Women Write about What They See When They Look in the Mirror.” She also commissioned and edited two collections of original essays on the first year of parenthood and raising young children: “Child of Mine” and “Room to Grow.” She is coauthor, with her mother, Christina Looper Baker, of a book on feminist mothers and daughters: “The Conversation Begins.” Her essays, articles, and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Yale Review, Southern Living, Ms, Parents, and Family Life, and others. Chambers host Picnic & Baseball The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pearl River (New York) Chamber of Commerce will host Picnic & Baseball on Friday, June 28, at the Rockland Boulders Stadium. The stadium is located at 1 Provident Bank Park Drive in Pomona, New York. The gates will open at 6 p.m. and the picnic will begin at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Rockland Boulders will take on the Quebec Les Capitales. Ticket prices are $22 for all Chamber members and $27 for non-members. Each ticket includes a reserved seat for the game and an unlimited barbecue buffet at the Bridge Bar from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It is ‘80s Night, so guests may dress in style and enjoy contests and music from the 1980s. Muti to discuss ‘Essays for My Father’ Author and former mayor of Ramsey Richard Muti will discuss his new book, “Essays for My Father: A Legacy of Passion, Politics, and Patriotism in Small-town America” on Sunday, June 30. The program will be held at 2 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah. “Essays for my Father” is a collection of essays about Governor Chris Christie and New Jersey politics, the national political scene, unnecessary wars, wrong-headed government, rare displays of political courage, an ItalianAmerican heritage shared by 17 million Americans, public employee unions, and other public policy issues that challenge state and federal government. Muti has published this collection in honor of the 100th Anniversary of his father’s birth. This author has more than 100 publishing credits, most of which relate to public policy, law, politics, and government. He has spent 19 years as a successful trial prosecutor and has taught writing, American government and politics, criminal justice, and history at three New Jersey universities. This is his fourth book. Muti is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Harvard Business School, and Rutgers Law School. He is a former Navy pilot. Circle of Freedom fundraiser set On Wednesday, June 19, the Mahwah Bar & Grill at 2 Island Road in Mahwah will host a fundraiser to benefit the Mahwah Beautification Committee’s Circle of Freedom, a memorial garden in Veterans Park. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of the dinner receipts from that evening to the memorial garden. Everyone is welcome. Reservations are recommended. The interim superintendent also helped usher in the new teacher evaluation system, and assisted with scheduling changes and other issues related to Hurricane Sandy. The storm, which hit the area on Oct. 29, 2012, and left the area without power and closed the schools for several days. DeYoung received A.B. (summa cum laude) and M.A. degrees in mathematics from Montclair State University, and pursued graduate studies in educational administration at William Paterson University, Jersey City State College, and Teachers College at Columbia University. He is certified in the State of New Jersey as a school administrator, principal, supervisor, and secondary school mathematics teacher. He has served as a math instructor at Montclair State University, William Paterson University, and at Bergen Community College. He taught math and computer science at Indian Hills High School in Oakland from 1968 to 1979 before he became math supervisor for the Ramsey public schools. He served Ramsey as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction from 1984 through 1991, after which time he became the district’s superintendent of schools. He remained in that post from January 1992 through December 2005. DeYoung will be succeeded by Dr. Matthew J. Murphy.
