Meet Frank: Frank is a sweet, 15-year-old boy, who was diagnosed with bone cancer. ECF started working with the family soon after learning of Frank’s diagnosis in May. Frank is definitely a fighter, and he is determined to beat his cancer. He has been receiving chemotherapy treatments since May, and he will continue these treatments until July 2014. He is currently using crutches to help him get around, due to the tumor in his leg. Frank’s cancer has added great challenges to the family. His mother used to work multiple jobs to help support her children, but she has recently had to cut her hours significantly to be there for her son. Mom tries so hard to remain positive for Frank, and never shows him when she is feeling down or stressed about the situation. Frank is a very well-rounded adolescent, who stays active with a variety of hobbies and interests. He enjoys playing football, basketball, and soccer. He is very musical, and plays three instruments, including the saxophone, the drums, and the trombone. In his free-time, Frank also enjoys listen to rap and indie music. Due to the family’s difficult financial situation, the children are in need of some new clothing, especially for the summer and for back to school time in September. The three girls are two-and-a-half, nine-and-a-half, and 17. Although this is a proud family, and they find it difficult to accept outside help, they would greatly appreciate support at this time. Gift cards would enable Mom to get all four children some much-needed clothing. Our families also need the following items: • New twin and queen-size sheets • Stage 3 and 4 diapers and baby wipes • Cake mix and icing for birthday bags • A computer hard drive • Microwaves and toaster ovens • Test strips for one of our diabetic children • New or gently-used air conditioners • Spanish speaking volunteers who want to deliver food to our families. We rely on our local community to help support our families. Many of them do not have the financial or emotional support to help them get through a major illness like cancer. Please remember that we do not charge anything for our services. We rely on you! If your company has a charitable giving program, please let us know. The community can help in a variety of ways. Your efforts help us to help families in many On Thursday, July 18, the Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will host an intimate Wine Tasting, sponsored by Torne Valley Vineyards. The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at One Torne Brook Road in Hillburn, New York. A variety of wines will be sampled and refreshments will be served. As a special treat, Luxx Chocolat will offer a wine pairing with chocolate during the evening. All are invited to this networking event; Chamber membership is not required. New attendees will be able to introduce themselves and their businesses. The cost is $20 for Chamber members and $35 for nonmembers; pre-registration is a must.
