PBA announces new board members The Ramsey Policemen’s Benevolent Association has announced its new executive board officers for 2013-2014: Craig Weber, president; Marc Shingelo, vice president; Matt Rork, treasurer; Adam Szelag, financial officer; and Anthony Fiore, recording officer. Bryan Arsi will serve as sergeant-at-arms and Jeff Guilfoyle will serve as delegate. This year’s board trustees are Brad Smith, Erik Sanders, and Mike Parise. VBS features ‘Operation Overboard’ The First Presbyterian Church of Ramsey and Highlands Presbyterian Church of Allendale invite children from age three through fifth grade to Vacation Bible School, which will be held Aug. 19 through 23. Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep with God will meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon at First Presbyterian Church located at 15 Shuart Lane in Ramsey. Participants will explore and experience God’s underwater universe. Adventures will include regular Deep Sea Voyages into Bible fun and creative crafts, hands-on mission work, water science, and great music. The cost to attend is $20 per child. Knights to host ‘Cleat Exchange’ The Ramsey Knights of Columbus is hosting a “Cleat Exchange,” and is now collecting gently-used sports cleats for girls and boys. Anyone who donates cleats will receive a voucher to purchase another gently-used pair of cleats for $10. The sale will be held July 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cleats will cost $20 without a voucher. Donations of the sport shoes should be tagged with gender and size, and may be dropped off at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 48 Mechanic Street in Ramsey through July 18. The building will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. Unsold cleats will be donated to Inner City Sports. Redeemer sets Vacation Bible School The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, located at 55
Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey, will host a Vacation Bible School Aug. 12 through 16. Children who will be four years old by Oct. 1 through students in grade four are invited to attend Kingdom Rock: Where Kids Stand Strong for God! Infants through three-year-olds are welcome to join “My Grown-Up & Me” with a parent or guardian. Vacation Bible School will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Snacks will be served. The fee for the program is $15 for one child, $25 for two children, or $30 for three or more children. Space is limited. Registration forms, available in the church office, are due by July 22. Summer Reading Clubs available Ramsey teens are invited to join “Beneath the Surface,” the Ramsey Library’s Summer Reading Club. Teens in grades six and up are invited to sign up for a reading log at the reference desk. Members of the program are welcome to attend a theater workshop with Ms. Betsy from Backyard Productions on July 16, Beading with Bethany on July 23, a Beneath the Surface Grand Finale set for July 30, and “Teen Tuesdays” in July from 5 to 6 p.m. Snacks and door prizes are included. Pre-registration encouraged; but drop-ins are welcome. Ramsey adults may participate in “Groundbreaking Reads.” Adults are invited to answer a weekly trivia question for an opportunity to win a prize. Ramsey Reads to discuss ‘Moloka’i’ Ramsey Reads, the town-wide book club will discuss Alan Brennert’s “Moloka’i” on Tuesday, July 23 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Set in Honolulu in the 1890s, young Rachel Kalama is part of a big, loving Hawaiian family and dreams of seeing far-off lands. But at the age of seven, Rachel’s dreams are shattered by the discovery that she has leprosy. Forcibly removed from her family, she is sent to Kalaupapa, the isolated leper colony on the island of Moloka’i. In her exile, she finds a family of friends to replace the family she has
lost. Based on real events, this is a story about life, hope, and the strength of the human spirit. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. The program is for Ramsey residents. Seniors invited to Zumba class Ramsey seniors are invited to join a trial Zumba Gold® class on July 16 at 1 p.m. Mary-Lee Costello, an experienced licensed instructor, will lead the dance fitness program that is done to Latin and international music. The dance will be modified to accommodate senior fitness levels so everyone can participate with confidence. The price of $10 is for an eight week session, payable at the senior center on the trial date. The session will begin July 23 at 1 p.m. Leisure Club plans trips The Ramsey Leisure Club will visit Resorts Casino in Atlantic City on Thursday, Aug. 1. The bus will depart from the Lutheran Church at 9 a.m. and will return at approximately 6:30 p.m. The cost is $32 for members and $36 for non members, and includes $25 slot play and buffet. The club will travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania Nov. 19 through 20. The trip will include a tour of Gettysburg, the American Music Theatre’s show “The First Noel,” and more. Space is limited. Sessions are held at 11 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the Lutheran Church, 55 Wyckoff Avenue. Wine Tasting Dinner set The Ramsey Golf and Country Club will host a Wine Tasting Dinner in the Abbey Dining Room on Thursday, July 25. The event will begin at 7 p.m. with a cocktail reception on the patio overlooking the golf course and continue with a five-course dinner featuring the reserve collections of Cakebread Cellars paired with dishes from the club’s culinary team.
