U.S. Lacrosse Northeast Championships, a youth lacrosse tournament at the University of Massachusetts, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited, was held recently in Amherst, Massachusetts. Led by Head Coach Jim Mulvey of Upper Saddle River, assisted by Coach Doug Edmonds of Upper Saddle River and Coach John Bodnar of Lyndhurst, 23 boys from various towns were selected from 75 players who tried out. The elite group of players represented several towns in the area: Ho-Ho-Kus, Greg Coleman (goalie); Ridgewood, Luke Broderick (attack), Jack Kiernan (attack), and Charlie Messineo (defense); Glen Rock, Robert Ray (defense); Mahwah, Aidan Carroll (midfield); and Wyckoff, Grant Brewster (defense) in addition to players from North and Central New Jersey (Haworth, Short Hills, Summit, Glen Ridge, Cranford, Essex Fells, Ringwood, West Caldwell, Bernardsville, and Verona). The tournament kicked off with a 3-3 tie vs. Next Level Rhode Island. The team beat Plymouth Rock from Massachusetts with a score of 12-0. The last opponent in pool play was the Pennsylvania Dawgs, which they beat 10-0. This made them the number two seed going into the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, they beat New Jersey Northwest All Stars 7-1. Then, in the championship game they pulled off an amazing 8-7 comeback win against Next Level to be crowned the Northeast Regional Champions. As regional champs, they received an automatic bid to the 2013 US Lacrosse National Championships in Orlando, Florida, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited, at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, FL which will take place July 25-27. The boys will play the top teams in the country from four regions in hopes of becoming the U-15 National Champions. Rotarians play for charity The Bergen Highlands/Ramsey Rotary Club celebrated Independence Day by donning uniforms to play in the Ramsey Stars and Stripes Softball Game against a team composed of Ramsey Police, Fire, and EMS members. Led by Captain and BH/R Rotary Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin O’Rourke, members of the club played hard and well in a game that served as a fundraiser for VFW Post 682. As temperatures pushed past 90 degrees, they scored eight runs, though the excellent Ramsey team eventually took the day. During his last at-bat, Rotarian Rich Farnham hit a home run over the left field fence, guaranteeing an additional donation to the BH/R Rotary Club’s commitment to VFW Post 682.
