Dr. Howard Kliman, podiatrist, makes house calls to seniors – and has created a way to help connect seniors with other in-home service providers. One day, after treating a disabled patient in her Englewood home, he told his wife Lilly Kliman, a clinical social worker, that the woman was recently widowed and needed someone to talk to. He asked if she would be willing to make a house call to his patient. She did. From that day on, the Klimans decided there had to be a way to link patients with professionals who would visit them at home. The solution the Upper Saddle River couple developed is UnitedHouseCalls.com, a website that links people in Bergen and Rockland counties (and other counties in the near future) to podiatrists, social workers, geriatric care specialists, home health agencies, physical therapists, hairstylists, pet sitters, and many other professionals to help people receive care at home. “There was a time when doctors regularly made house calls,” recalled Lilly, who not only sees clients in her Englewood office but has also been making visits to people who are unable to leave home.
Website helps seniors find services
“With a growing senior population, home visits by doctors and other service providers are needed more than ever. Helping someone who can not otherwise get to you because of age, illness, or lack of transportation is very rewarding. People are usually very appreciative.” The client or patient simply logs on to the website to Find a Provider, enters state and zip code, selects from a list of categories that offers the provider’s profile, contact information, and fee for service. Patients call the provider directly to make a house call appointment. Many of the medical professionals accept Medicare and other types of insurance. There is never a charge to search for a provider: www. unitedhousecalls.com is a free search engine for the community. “Our database continues to grow daily and we welcome inquiries from any house call providers who would like to list with us,” Lilly Kliman added. To learn more, log on to the website and create a profile or contact Lilly Kliman, LCSW at (201) 314-6835 or LK429@aol.com.
