‘Paying for College’ to be presented The Mahwah Public Library will present “Paying for College” on Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. Admissions counselor, financial aid counselor, and academic advisor Joshua Marber, MS.Ed. will advise teens and their parents about the college admission process. The workshop will include advice on topics such as financial aid, filling out FAFSA and other financial aid forms, and how to search and apply for scholarships. Group to discuss ‘Meeting Jesus in the Gospels’ At 5 p.m. on Jan. 27, the Not by Bread Alone Spiritual Book Discussion Group will discuss George Martin’s “Meeting Jesus in the Gospels” at Panera Bread, 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. In the context of short, lively reflections, Martin explores scripture to reveal how Jesus demonstrates his mercy, comfort, strength, and forgiveness, revealing that Jesus was more than simply a kindly man wandering around the hills of Galilee. Sunday Afternoon Concert Series to continue The Mahwah Public Library is hosting free concerts on Sunday afternoons in January. The programs are held at the library located at 100 Ridge Road. Performances begin at 2 p.m. Seating is available on a “first come” basis. On Jan. 20, Ladies of Soul with Rhonda Denet and the Silver Fox Songs Trio will perform soul classics such as “Respect,” “What’s Going On,” “At Last,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “A Natural Woman,” “Let’s Stay Together,” and more. Denet has performed throughout the region and across the country at concert halls, theaters, clubs, resorts, museums, and premier wedding venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center Theater, New York Friar’s Club, Waldorf Astoria, B.B. King’s Bar & Grill, and Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar. In addition to being the founder and primary performer for the Silver Fox Songs showcase series, Denet performs regularly throughout the New York metropolitan area with her band The Bad Cats, as the lead vocalist for The Kazz Music Orchestra, and with several other regional projects. The Kootz will perform classic rock and roll of the 1960s and 1970s on Jan. 27. The band will present selections from the Beatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Steve Winwood, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Rolling Stones, and Creedance
Clearwater Revival. Call (201) 529-7323. Chernowetz exhibits at local library Artist Melissa Chernowetz will be exhibiting her mixed media shadowboxes at the Paramus Public Library through Jan. 31. Chernowetz, who grew up in Mahwah, creates each shadowbox using a paper cut design illuminated by a colorful, handmade LED circuit. Paper cutting is an ancient art that evolved in many different cultures all over the world. LEDs, which were developed in the 20th century, are efficient light sources with a lifetime superior to that of the incandescent bulb. Together, they create a harmonious effect, with the LED lights lending depth. Each shadowbox features whimsical scenes and characters from folklore and pop culture. Church sets reflection service On Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m., the Church of the Immaculate Conception will host a quite reflection upon Jesus’ teaching on prayer in Saint Luke’s Gospel. Lectio Divina is an ancient practice of prayer and contemplation of the scriptures. The Church of the Immaculate Conception, which is located at 900 Darlington Avenue in Mahwah, practices Lectio Divina monthly. The program is open to the general public and there is no cost. Chamber plans ‘after hours’ networking The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a Business After Hours networking event for Chamber members and non-members on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paramus Auto Mall Chevrolet located at 194 Route 17 North in Paramus. As the first of many networking opportunities scheduled for 2013, the Business After Hours event will give attendees the chance to interact with Chamber members and non-members, browse the new Chevrolet models, and enjoy refreshments graciously provided by the Paramus Auto Mall. All guests are encouraged to bring a good supply of business cards. The Business After Hours Event is $15 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. Nicene Creed study offered The Church of the Immaculate Conception will present a five-part study of the Nicene Creed, “Credo,” in celebration of its Year of Faith. This program will be held on Jan. 24, Feb. 21, and March 14 at 7:30 p.m. “Credo” will feature guest speakers Rev. Douglas
Milewski, S.T.D., professor of theology at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology at Seton Hall; Sister Mary Gabriel, SV of the Sisters of Life; Maria Parker, teacher and former FOCUS Missionary; Father Andrew Apostoli of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal; and Dr. Ines Murzaku, Ph.D., professor of religious studies at Seton Hall. Every week, Christians pray the ancient words of the Nicene Creed. Mai as auditor, McManimon and Scotland as bond counsel, Robert McNerney of McNerney & Associates as real estate tax appeal appraisal consultant, and Steven D. Muhlstock as tax appeal attorney. The resolutions also included mayoral appointments of Dennis G. Harraka as the township’s prosecutor, and Karen A. Prelich Passaro and Robert P. Zisgen as the township’s co-public defenders. The council also confirmed the mayoral appointments of Brian Campion as head of the department of administration and finance, Keith Hallissey as the head of the department of public works, Angela Musella as head of the department of health, James Batelli as chief of the police department, Gary Montroy as head of the department of inspections, Raymond Roe as head of the department of emergency services, Andrew T. Fede as head of the department of law, and Dawn DaPuzzo as head of the department of recreation. For the first time in township history, the 2012 mayor and council election was held during the November general election. Previously, the township’s council elections were held every other May. In August 2010, the township agreed to change its election under the provisions of a new state law that permitted nonpartisan municipal governments such as Mahwah to hold their elections in November.
