Mahwah budget (continued from page 5) surplus in the 2013 budget, which is the amount he says is needed to maintain the township’s Triple A bond rating. He suggested the additional $261,560 be put into the operating budget to reduce taxes. Besides the municipal tax obligation, the total property tax bill includes the tax obligation for the county and municipal open space taxes, the minimum library tax, the local school district tax, and the Bergen County tax. The mayor’s budget estimates a potential total tax rate of $1.69 for 2013, an increase of 6.4 cents over the current tax rate. The new rate would increase taxes on a home with the average assessed valuation by $301 a year. The governing body has until March 15 to review the budgets of the township’s individual departments, make changes to the mayor’s proposed budget, and introduce the final budget by March 15 so the spending plan can be adopted by April 26, the date required by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
