Club seeks donation of prom dresses The Ramsey High School Interact Club is collecting donations of gently-used prom and bridesmaid dresses to help underprivileged girls attend their schools’ formals. Dresses may be dropped off at Ramsey High School, 256 East Main Street, and placed in the collection box located near the main office. Dresses will be accepted through April 30. Juniors plan meeting, seek donations The Junior Woman’s Club of Ramsey will meet on Thursday, May 9 at the Ramsey Ambulance Corps Building at 41 North Island Avenue. The session will begin at 7:30 p.m. This organization serves and supports the community through volunteering, fund-raising and social events. For more information, visit ramseyjuniors.com. On May 11, the membership will hold its Second Annual Tag Sale and Bake Sale. All proceeds from this event will be donated to civic organizations in Ramsey. At last year’s tag sale the club earned over $1700. The Juniors are seeking donations of saleable items including children’s toys, clothing, household items, small appliances, and more. To make arrangements to drop off donations, contact JWCRTagSale@aol.com or call (201) 218-5886. Senior news The Ramsey Seniors will visit the Bronx Zoo and Arthur Avenue on Wednesday, June 12. Participants may stop by the Congo Gorilla Forest, the Wild Asia Monorail, the Butterfly Garden, the zoo shuttle, a 4D theater, and Jungle World. Following the morning activities, the group will visit Arthur Avenue to enjoy the Italian restaurants, bakeries, butcher shops, and more. Participants will have lunch on their own. Signups will begin May 16 at 9 a.m. at borough hall, 33 North Central Avenue in Ramsey. The cost is $38 per person. Checks should be made payable to “Ramsey Seniors.” This trip requires some walking. Comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen are suggested. The bus will return to Ramsey at approximately 5:30 p.m. A fall trip to Nashville, Tennessee is planned for Sept. 15 through 20. This six-day excursion will include a backstage tour of the Grand Ole Opry, a guided tour of Nashville, the Country Music Hall of Fame, five breakfasts, and dinners at the Nightlife Dinner Theatre and the Wild Horse Saloon. The men’s bocce group meets at the Ramsey Pool at 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The women’s group will begin on May 2 at 10 a.m. and will meet once a week. The morning walkers meet Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. at Varka’s parking lot. Those who wish to walk at 9:30 a.m. may meet at the Interstate entrance to the bike path. Ping pong is all the rage! Seniors may join the fun every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. or Friday at noon at the senior center. There is also a group that meets every

Club announces Annual Plant Sale The Ramsey Area Garden Club will hold its Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Old Ramsey Train Station off Main Street. A large variety of annuals and perennials from members and professional growers will be for sale. Hanging baskets, houseplants, and special Mothers Day gift baskets will also be available. Quilters sought for church mission The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, located at 55 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey, hosts quilters’ meetings at 10 a.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month. The group prepares quilts to be sent to Lutheran World Relief for global distribution. Novice and experienced quilters are welcome. The group is seeking donations of gently-used sheets, thin blankets, and quilt batting. New walking group forming A new walking group, Ramsey Walks at 5 p.m., has been created to accommodate residents who prefer late afternoon exercise or find it difficult to attend a morning walk. This new group meets in the Smith School parking lot at 2 Monroe Street at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The walks are approximately 45 minutes and follow local, low-traffic streets on the west side of Ramsey. Participants of all ages and walking speeds are welcome. Registration is not necessary. The board of health also hosts two morning groups: Ramsey Walks at 8 a.m., which meets in Varka’s parking lot; and Ramsey Walks at 9:30 a.m., which meets at the Interstate Shopping Center entrance to the bike path. Dr. Paul Undreiner (pictured), music director at the First Presbyterian Church of Ramsey, will perform a concert of original compositions on May 5 at 3 p.m. Guest artists will also be performing. Undreiner has written many pieces for the church’s chancel and Agape Handbell choirs. He received his Ph.D. in music theory and composition from Rutgers University, and currently sits on the faculty of the Mason Gross School of the Arts. Undreiner has studied, conducted, and performed around the world. Tickets are $10 per person and the proceeds will be dedicated to the support the church’s music fund. Book groups plan discussions The First Presbyterian Church of Ramsey’s Literary Ladies will meet to discuss Madeleine Albright’s “Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 19371948” on April 24. The former U.S. secretary of state brings her own family history in her native Czechoslovakia to World War II-era history. The group will meet at 10 a.m. in the McDermott Room. De Young acknowledged that he was so impressed that he urged Murphy to apply for the superintendent’s post. Montessano had reportedly had the same idea and urged Murphy to consider serving in Ramsey. Murphy already has ties to Ramsey: His wife, Megan, is a Ramsey High School graduate.
