Thirteen years ago, Dr. Goland began one of the nation’s most successful efforts to advance patient care, research, and education in the field of diabetes. The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center, combining premier family-centered patient care and education with world-class diabetes research programs, opened in October 1998 under the direction of Dr. Goland and co-director, Dr. Rudolph Leibel. More than 1,500 patients with diabetes are seen monthly. The Berrie Center’s pediatric and adult patient population, now numbering more than 10,000 people, is extraordinarily diverse, including patients of diverse ages, ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status.

Learn about Edwardian Manor life Judith Krall-Russo will present “Life at the Edwardian Manor: Inspired by Downton Abbey” at the Mahwah Public Library on Saturday, April 27. This free program will begin at 2 p.m. The critically-acclaimed TV series “Downton Abbey” has renewed popular interest in the Edwardian era, when King Edward VII reigned in the United Kingdom. It was a time of great disparity between the haves and the have-nots. Wealthy aristocrats owned huge manor houses, and reveled in luxury, leisure, and extravagant entertaining. The rich expected their every whim to be indulged, and all their daily needs to be fulfilled by the lower class of domestic servants. This “Golden Age,” which was a reaction to the Victorian era (and actually began in the late 19th century), perched on a shaky foundation as the winds of change brought a time of great social mobility within the rigid British class system. Tea expert Krall-Russo began studying the customs and traditions of this universal beverage 30 years ago and has earned certifications as a tea specialist by The Tea School in Pomfret, Connecticut and The Specialty Tea Institute of New York. KrallRusso is currently studying the Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Uresenke Chanoyo Center and gong fu Chinese Tea Ceremony at The Tea Gallery, both in New York City. All are welcome to this event. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. For more information, call (201) 529-READ. ICAPs to see ‘Noah’ Immaculate Conception Adult Parishioners will host a trip to see “Noah” at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on May 14. Senior news The Mahwah Senior Center is sponsoring a trip to the Culinary Institute of America and Locust Grove in Hyde Park, New York on Friday, May 10. The cost for Mahwah residents is $51 per person and includes deluxe motor coach transportation, a guided tour of Locust Grove, and a three course lunch at Caterina De Medici located at the culinary institute. Home of telegraph inventor and artist Samuel F. B. Morse, Locust Grove is a unique combination of landscaped lawns, sweeping vistas, elegant collections, and Italianate architecture, making it one of the most handsome Hudson River estates. The group will depart from the Mahwah Senior Center, 475 Corporate Drive, at 9:30 a.m. On May 2, the Mahwah seniors are invited to a screening of “Argo” in the Great Room of the center. The film will begin at noon and refreshments will be served. A free dance class will be offered on May 13 at noon. The program will include a mix of ballroom, Latin salsa, the Hustle, and more. The Bergen County Housing Coalition will send a representative to the senior center on May 16 to discuss tenant rights with the seniors. The program will begin at noon and the donation of $2 covers lunch. Call the center to RSVP. The coalition provides legal guidance and case service in landlord-tenant law to low- and moderate-income residents of Bergen County. Clients involved in landlord-tenant disputes are counseled and informed of their rights and responsibilities, local rent control ordinances, state and local property maintenance codes, and other statutes. Call the center at (201) 529-5757, extension 277 for lunch reservations, or for more information.

The mission of the Berrie Center is to provide “the care until the cure.” The clinical space is directly adjacent to research laboratories working on the prevention, treatment and ultimately, cure of the disease. Because of close collaboration between clinicians and investigators at the Berrie Center, advances in research are made available to the patients as rapidly as possible. The Berrie Center is a leader in the recruitment of minority research subjects and in reducing health care disparities, particularly in children with diabetes. A major focus of Dr. Goland’s work is on translational research and clinical trials in adult and pediatric patients with type 1 and
type 2 diabetes. Dr. Goland is also the J. Merrill Eastman Professor of Clinical Diabetes in the departments of medicine and pediatrics at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where she earned her MD in 1980. She was subsequently a resident and chief medical resident at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and completed training in endocrinology research at Columbia. Her undergraduate degree is from Harvard University. BVMI provides free primary and preventive medical care to low-income, working residents of Bergen County who do not have health insurance or the means to pay for care. Volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other healthcare providers saw 1,000 patients in 5,000 medical visits in 2012. BVMI is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, completely dependent on contributed income from individuals, businesses, community groups and foundation grants. Friends of BVMI was established in 2011 to promote and support the mission of BVMI through community outreach and fundraising and to offer enrichment opportunities to its members. “BVMI has demonstrated that it can make a huge difference for people who lack health insurance, while also offering a model for prevention, coordinated care and reduced cost in the long run,” said Ridgewood resident Heidi Ahlborn, MD, the founder of the group. Dr. Ahlborn also serves on the BVMI board and its Fundraising Committee. For details about Friends of BVMI and to reserve space at the May 2 Spring Luncheon, e-mail friends@bvmi.net.
