Borough celebrates Earth Day The Franklin Lakes Environmental Commission will celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 21 at the public library located at 470 DeKorte Drive. From 2 to 4 p.m., residents may enjoy displays, videos, prizes and giveaways, healthy snacks, and a talk by Randall Solomon, co-director of Sustainable New Jersey. Solomon will discuss the organization’s efforts in helping New Jersey’s municipalities toward reducing pollution and waste. The borough of Franklin Lakes has recently been awarded Certification as a Sustainable Community. On May 4, the environmental commission and the borough’s recycling program will host its annual Cleanup Day from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve off High Mountain Road. Participants may clean up the preserve or other areas of town. The department of public works will assist with directions. A light breakfast will be served and cleanup equipment will be available. Participants are encouraged to wear long pants. Board of education to meet The Franklin Lakes Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, April 16 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held at Colonial Road School, 749 Colonial Road in Franklin Lakes. Keenan to speak on Affordable Care Act On May 20, Richard D. Keenan will present a talk on “The Affordable Care Act: The Impact on the United States,
The Valley Hospital, and You.” This speaker is being sponsored by the Franklin Lakes Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary. The meeting will be held at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 De Korte Drive, from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Keenan, executive vice president – finance of the Valley Hospital System, has been the chief financial officer of the hospital since 1974. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and is an advanced member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, past chairman of the Hospital Financial Management Association Reimbursement Committee, and past member of the Commissioner of Health’s DRG Task Force. Learn how to ‘find’ scholarship money Carolee Gravina of College-Bound-Guidance will present “How High School Students Can Find Scholarship Money” on Thursday, April 25 at the Franklin Lakes Library. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Parents and students will have the opportunity to learn the truths and myths about college scholarship money and how high school students can maximize acceptance opportunities and scholarship offers. Make a Mother’s Day craft Children in grades three through five are invited to make a one-of-a-kind craft for mom on Thursday, May 9 with local artist Jacque B. Library offers programs for adults Betsy Coyne will present “Files and Folders: I Know I Saved It...Where’d it Go?” at the Franklin Lakes Public Library on Tuesday, April 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Coyne, of the PC Teacher in Ramsey, will cover tips on how to organize files. Registration is required and may be completed by calling the adult reference desk at (201) 891-2224. Space is limited. In celebration of National Poetry Month, S. Thomas Summers and David Vincenti will present a study of history through poetry on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. “Where Poetry and History Collide” includes verse and a discussion of the Civil War era and the life of Galileo. The program will entertain fans of poetry and history alike. On April 23, emotional wellness coach SueAnn Schierloh will present “Mindful Eating” at 7 p.m. The presentation will include video clips and a discussion. On April 28, the Allegro Singers will celebrate in song the 200th Birthday Anniversary of the Giuseppe Verdi at 3 p.m. Verdi composed 29 operas, including “Nabucco,” “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata,” and “Aida.” The library is located at 470 DeKorte Drive.
