Bonds to be issued for West Airmount project
by Frank J. McMahon The Township of Mahwah has adopted an ordinance that authorizes the issuance of $690,000 in bonds or notes to pay for the replacement of a large drainage pipe in West Airmount Road between Franklin Turnpike and Island Road. The project will involve the excavation of West Air-
mount Road and the installation of about 1,000 feet of pipe in the roadway, which passes under the Conrail railroad tracks where the road is only wide enough to permit one lane of traffic. The road is one of only three in the township that provide access from one side of the railroad tracks to the other. The bonds or notes along with a $35,000 down payment, as required by law, will provide the $725,000 needed to cover the estimated cost of the project. According to Kevin Boswell of Boswell McClave Engineering, the township’s engineering firm, and Brian Campion, the township administrator, the existing drainage pipe is in poor condition and is in need of replacement. Campion said the project is long overdue because the existing pipe has outlived its useful life. He wants to install a pipe that will last as long as possible. Boswell said the pipe could be replaced with a PVC (continued on page 29)
Making an impact
The Young World Day School Student Council recently organized two charity drives. In one week, they collected about 150 children’s books as part of The Big Book Drive, a benefit for the Paterson Public Library. The books collected will replenish those that were destroyed during a recent flood. The students also collected 30 grocery bags worth of food that were donated to the Mahwah Center for Food Action.
