Register for adult softball Mahwah Recreation will hold registration for firsttime adult softball league players from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, May 9 at the recreation building at 70 East Ramapo Avenue. The season will begin June 17. Men will play on Mondays and Wednesdays and women will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Players must be at least 21 years of age and must provide proof of residency. The fee to play is $25. Deadline for registration is May 10. The registration form is available online at www.mahwahtwp.org, under Forms Center. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet on Tuesday, April 9 in the municipal building located at 475 Corporate Drive. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Museum to host ‘living history’ program On Thursday, April 11, the Mahwah Museum Lecture Series will present “Growing Up in the Neighborhoods of Mahwah, 1950-1970: A Panel Discussion and Oral History.” This 7:30 p.m. lecture will take place in the Ramapo Reformed Church Educational Building, 100 Island Road in Mahwah. Mahwah was an exciting place in the baby boom years that followed World War II. A panel of people who grew up in the township during that period will reminisce and share their stories. Warren Storms from Fardale, Kathy Rozanski Brewster from Masonicus, John Edwards and Bill Dator from Cragmere/East Mahwah, John Spiech from West Mahwah, Scott (Buhlmeyer) Gordon from the Ramapo Valley, and Walter Van Dunk from Stag Hill will present this living history. Audience members will also be invited to share their memories. The program will be videotaped for the museum’s archives and audience participation will be encouraged. Tom Dunn, the president of the museum, will moderate. Admission is $3 for non-members. Museum members and children are admitted free of charge. Refreshments will be served. On Tuesday, April 16, Mahwah Museum Vice President Charles Carreras and Jim Wysocki, a close friend of Les Paul, will present “The Genius of Les Paul.” This gallery talk will take place in the Les Paul exhibit in the Mahwah Museum. Admission is $10. The Mahwah Museum is located at 201 Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah.
Chamber hosts breakfast event The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a breakfast event for Chamber members and non-members on Wednesday, April 10. The breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. at Mahwah Bar and Grill, 2 Island Road in Mahwah. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with other guests and enjoy a buffet-style breakfast while listening to a brief presentation by Gina Palumbo of Abbott & Caserta Realtors. Her presentation -- “Do I Lease or Buy My Commercial Real Estate?” --will be followed by a question and answer period. The Chamber will also provide a media table for members to display business literature and promotional items. Sponsorships are available for the event; anyone interested should contact the Chamber directly for details. This breakfast event is $25 for Chamber members and $40 for non-members. Free tax preparation available AARP’s Tax Aide will provide free tax assistance at the Mahwah Senior Center, 475 Corporate Drive in Mahwah, every Monday and Friday through April 12. The tax aide program is for seniors and others with low to moderate income. Participants will receive assistance with their federal and state tax returns. Tax assistance program offered Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is offered at the Mahwah Public Library on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The VITA Program includes free tax preparation and consultation to lowincome individuals. Returns may be prepared for those earning up to $45,000 in income (for single individuals and married couples filing jointly). Certified volunteers will provide assistance through April 13. The volunteers may help with credits such as the earned income tax credit, child tax credit, and credit for the elderly or disabled. Free Efiling is provided on site. Town-wide Garage Sale seeks participants Mahwah Recreation is seeking residents who would like
to participate in the Town-wide Garage Sale set for Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Rain date: April 28.) Residents who wish to participate may reserve a space at the municipal building parking lot at 475 Corporate Drive. Participants may set up their own tables from 8 to 9 a.m. the day of the sale. No merchandise may be left at the location at the end of the day. Residents who wish to hold a sale at their home may choose to be included on the master map of participants. The registration form may be found at www.mahwahtwp.org under Forms Center. The cost to participate is $5. The reservation deadline for either option is April 19. Sunday music concert series continues The Mahwah Public Library, located at 100 Ridge Road, hosts free concerts on Sunday afternoons. The 2 p.m. programs are free and tickets are not required. Seating is available on a “first come” basis. On April 14, the library will host a performance by Carnaby Street. Featuring Chris Roselle on guitar and lead vocals, Chris Breetveld on bass guitar and background vocals, and Dino Dimartino on the drums and background vocals, this group transports listeners to the heart of pop music’s favorite era: the ‘60s. Featuring timeless songs from the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Who, the Moody Blues, Bob Dylan, and the Monkees. Carnaby Street revives the music that defines the mood of this unique period. Jane Stuart sings “A Tribute to the Great Ladies of Jazz” with piano and percussion Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaugh, and many more on April 21. Stuart lends her own jazz style to tribute to iconic vocalists and shares interesting insights about the artists including how they got started in music and the impressions they’ve made.
