New walking group forming A new walking group, Ramsey Walks at 5 p.m., has been created to accommodate residents who prefer late afternoon exercise or find it difficult to attend a morning walk. This new group meets in the Smith School parking lot at 2 Monroe Street at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The walks are approximately 45 minutes and follow local, low-traffic streets on the west side of Ramsey. Participants of all ages and walking speeds are welcome. Registration is not necessary. The board of health also hosts two morning groups: Ramsey Walks at 8 a.m., which meets in Varka’s parking lot; and Ramsey Walks at 9:30 a.m., which meets at the Interstate Shopping Center entrance to the bike path. Juniors announce events The Junior Woman’s Club of Ramsey serves and supports the community through volunteering, fundraising and social events. For more information, visit ramseyjuniors.com. The club’s next monthly meeting will be Thursday, April 11 at the Ramsey Ambulance Corps building at 7:30 p.m. The club is currently seeking donations for its Second Annual Tag Sale & Bake Sale, which will be held May 11. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Ramsey’s civic organizations. The club is seeking donations of children’s toys, clothing, household items, small appliances, and more. Last year, the club netted over $1,700 from this sale and donated over $500 worth of items to Ramsey Responds. This year, the club is counting on the community’s help to make this event even more successful. Group seeks jewelry and book donations The Friends of Ramsey Library will be accepting donations of jewelry and books for the group’s Book & Jewelry Sale. Jewelry donations will be accepted April 8 through 18. Donations of books will be accepted April 22 through 25, during regular library hours. The friends can not accept VHS tapes, encyclopedias or textbooks. The Book & Jewelry Sale will be held April 26 through 28. A preview sale for “Friends” members will be held April 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. New members are always welcome; membership forms are available at the circulation desk. The sale will be open to the public on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 from noon to 3 p.m. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help with the sale may inquire at the library at 30 Wyckoff Avenue. Library hosts programs On April 19, Ramsey teens are invited to Friday Frenzy. From 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., students in grades six and up are welcome at the library for snacks, crafts, Nintendo Wii, Playstation, games, door prizes, and fun with Ms. Ellen and Ms. Maggie. Attendees may drop in; no sign up is necessary. Discover “The Joys of Hiking All Year Round” on Wednesday, April 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Adirondack Mountain Club leaders Peter Reiner and Suzan Gordon will share their hiking tips. Reiner and Gordon will present a slide show of local mountain peaks, offer suggestions on what to bring hiking in any season, and discuss how to use trail maps. Registration is not required. Ramsey Cleanup Day set The Ramsey Environmental Commission, with the support of the Ramsey Council, Ramsey Rescue, and the Bergen County Department of Health Services, Clean Communities Program, will host its annual cleanup on Saturday, April 20. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.
m. (Rain date: April 21.) Individuals, families, and groups are welcome to join in this civic service. Participants will meet at the Ramsey Rescue garage on Prospect Street to sign up. Woman’s Club sets events The Woman’s Club of Ramsey will host its Tenth Annual Heirloom Tomato & Herb Transplant Sale on Saturday, May 18. This popular event will be held in the parking lot at the Masonic Temple located at the corner of Lake Street and North Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey The sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be more than 90 varieties of the heirloom tomatoes and a huge selection of other plants. Join club members on Sunday, June 2 for the annual Strawberry Festival, which will launch the return of the outdoor Farmers Market to the Ramsey Main Street train station. Members will serve strawberry shortcakes to all. Leisure Club plans activities Ramsey’s Leisure Club will host a spring bus trip to the Bethwood Restaurant is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9 to see “Swinging with the Rat Pack.” The cost is $51 and includes lunch, a complimentary glass of wine, and the show. The club will take a three-day bus trip to the Tulip Festival in Albany May 9 through 11. The trip will include a visit to the Saratoga Casino and Raceway, two nights lodging, two breakfasts, and two dinners. Participants will attend the Tulip Festival ceremonies, which include musical performers and the crowning of the Tulip Queen at
Washington Park. An estimated 100,000 tulips will welcome visitors to the events of the day. A tour of the Brotherhood Winery will complete the itinerary. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to attend the Leisure Club meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday at the Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. All Ramsey residents are welcome. Senior news Seniors will be exhibiting their Chinese calligraphy artwork at the Ramsey Library, 30 Wyckoff Avenue, during the month of April. Artists Sandy Cohen, Vivian Jackovitz, Art Keys, Eva Lui, Mary Lyons, and Neng-Fong SooHoo will be featured. On April 23, a trip to Doolan’s Restaurant will feature a day with entertainer Bobby Byrne. The bus will depart at 9 a.m. and will return at 5:30 p.m. Lunch includes a one-hour open bar, choice of entree, and wine or soda. Sing along with the Best of Broadway and enjoy favorite tunes from the ‘40s to the present. The price is $60 and is payable to Ramsey Seniors. Call (201) 825-3400 for availability. A trip to Nashville, Tennessee is planned for Sept. 15 through 20. The trip will feature a visit to the Grand Ole Opry, a tour of Nashville, lodging at the Holiday Inn Opryland, dining at the Wild Horse Saloon and Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theater, five breakfasts, two dinners, and more.
