Library to host programs The Lee Memorial Library has scheduled varied programs for adults. On May 28 at 7 p.m., learn how to buy items on eBay. Program topics to be covered include: how to register as a new eBay user, how to search for an item, pricing and bidding strategies, how to check the seller’s reputation using eBay feedback, payment, tracking bids and purchases in My eBay, and more. Photographer Meredith Desmond will present “How to Take Better Pictures of Your Kids: Tips from a Pro on Capturing Your Family’s Spirit & Style” on June 6 at 7 p.m. Desmond will share the elements that evoke the spontaneity and style for which her work is noted, and will demonstrate how to capture the essence and emotions of family members without posing them. One member of the audience will receive a free photo session with Desmond for up to four people. A workshop on meditation will be offered on Saturday, June 8 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Learn the practice of meditation, experience peace of mind, and seek to lead a fulfilled life at this free workshop. Knitters and crocheters are invited to Stitch n’ Chat at the Lee Memorial Library on the third Monday of the month. The group meets at 7 p.m. in the loft. Shmoop now available The Lee Memorial Library at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale now offers the Shmoop database. Shmoop allows residents to prep for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams, and offers study guides for literature, Bible, poetry, Shakespeare, mythology, best-sellers, Dr. Seuss, pre-algebra, algebra, algebra II, geometry, biology, U.S. history flashcards, DMV, and careers. Rotary sets Scholarship Dinner & Wine Tasting The Allendale-Saddle River Rotary Foundation will host its Third Annual Scholarship Dinner & Wine Tasting on May 23. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Indian Trail Club, located at 830 Franklin Lake Road in Franklin Lakes. The event will benefit the Allendale-Saddle River Rotary Foundation’s Scholarship Fund, which funds scholarships for students residing in Allendale, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. The gourmet five-course dinner will be paired with wines from Maratene’s of Waldwick. The cost is $85 per person, all inclusive. Troop 4126 received the 2013 Bergen County Historic Preservation Award in the category of Youth Preservation for their DVD, ‘The Ghosts of Allendale.’ The DVD was based on Wright’s book about the real-life events of Revolutionary War hero John Fell. Fell’s house is located on Franklin Turnpike in Allendale.

Join the parade Allendale Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10181 invites veterans and civic and community groups to participate in the Memorial Day Parade and Service on May 27. Parade participants will assemble at 9 a.m. at Talman Place and Myrtle Avenue. The parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. and the service will be held at the end of the parade in Memorial Park. Parade attendees may pick up a free American flag donated by the Bank of America located at 90 West Allendale Avenue before and during the parade. After the parade, refreshments will be provided by the Allendale Volunteer Fire Department at 500 West Crescent Avenue. CERT to discuss storm preparedness The Allendale Community Emergency Response Team, in coordination with the Allendale Fire Department and Allendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps, will host a “Hurricane Season Prep Open House” on May 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will be held at the Allendale Fire Department headquarters at One Erie Plaza. Lack of awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. Learn what actions may be taken to reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster. CERT will present information about hurricane hazards and how to prepare for hurricane season. All residents are invited.
