Waldwick residents whose water meters have not been changed to the new radio-read type may soon find themselves without water service altogether. The borough council last week authorized Water Agent Mary Ann Viviani to notify the more than 200 residents affected that their water will be disconnected within 30 days of their final notice. “These residents have not responded to multiple letters asking for access to change the meters. This will be their last chance. We’ll give them 30 days, and if we don’t hear

from them, we’ll hang the red tag on their door the night before and shut their water off the next day,” Viviani said. She added that if people call for an appointment once they get the letter, the water will not be disconnected. “I hope people respond and let us change the meters so we can complete the project,” Viviani said. Viviani said some of the people who have denied access to the meter installers are older women who live alone, but not the majority. Carol Shepard, the borough’s public health nurse, who was present at the meeting, offered to check out
the list and speak to the people she knows and even accompany the installers where necessary. “I’m happy to help,” Shepard said. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz said the goal is to do away with meter readers by the end of the year. The meter conversion allows the entire town to be read in half a day by one person, substantially reducing expenses, he said. Kratz said that the council invested $300,000 seven years ago to undergo the conversion and now wants to have (continued on page 18)
