May 8, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 29 Saddle River Valley Notes Goetschius House hosts Perennial Sale The Garden Committee of the Upper Saddle River Historical Society will hold the group’s Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 18. The sale will begin at 10 a.m. at the Hopper-Goetschius Museum, located at the corner of Lake Street and East Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Sale items will include perennials, ferns, and heirloom plants potted from the museum gardens and donated by local gardeners. Plants are reasonably priced and all proceeds benefit the museum gardens. The sale will remain open until sold out. Volunteer gardeners meet on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the museum. New volunteers are welcome. Police chief to discuss scams Upper Saddle River Police Chief Pat Rotella will discuss scams that target the elderly with the Senior Club of Presentation Church on Tuesday, May 14. The group will gather at 9:45 a.m. in the Community Room at the church located at 271 West Saddle River Road. Chief Rotella will offer tips and precautions seniors may take at home and elsewhere. Gardeners set meeting Pat Libutti will discuss flowers and herbs at the May 21 meeting of the Saddle River Garden Club. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Bishop House located at 176 East Saddle River Road in Saddle River. The public is welcome. New deadline for scholarship The Saddle River Garden Club will award a $1,000 academic scholarship to a qualified applicant. In order to be eligible, a student must be a resident of northern Bergen County and must be planning to study environmental sciences, conservation, architectural design, horticulture, or botany. Churches host directed retreat The Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will co-sponsor a directed retreat with Saint Paul’s Church of Ramsey during the week of May 11 through 18. The retreat will begin and end with a group meeting on May 11 and 18 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. At the first meeting, there will be a 15-minute simulation of a spiritual direction session. During the week, Monday through Friday, each person will meet with his or her spiritual director privately for 30 minutes daily at a mutually convenient time. Participants will be asked to spend at least 30 minutes in prayer each day. There is no charge, but a freewill offering may be made at the concluding group meeting. Friends host May Book Sale The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will hold its May Book Sale on Saturday, May 11. The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lower level of the library located at 245 Lake Street. The sale will feature best-sellers, fiction, and nonfiction, DVDs, CDs, videos, and audio books. There is also a set of 50 leather bound classics available for purchase. USR Cleanup Day slated Individuals, families, teams, and organizations are invited to Upper Saddle River’s Town-wide Cleanup Day: Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. This event is being sponsored by the Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission. Participants should check in at Lions Park anytime between 8 a.m. and noon. Volunteers will be assigned (or may choose) an area to clean. Areas include: Lions Park, Hess Park, and school grounds. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Coffee, juice, and doughnuts will be available. Please note that participating children must be supervised by an adult. This year, representatives from the Upper Saddle River Green Team will be on hand to promote the “Make it Count!” recycling program. A Decorator’s Tale presented Interior decorator and designer Roseann Kearney will discuss her book, “A Decorator’s Tales by the Yard: Memoirs of a New Jersey Decorator” at the Upper Saddle River Library on May 9. Kearney’s book details true stories of a decorator’s journey with her clients. Kearney, who has been designing and decorating homes and offices for 38 years, is self-taught and is preparing to launch her own custom furniture line. Books will be available for sale.
