Friends host May Book Sale The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will hold its May Book Sale on Saturday, May 11. The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lower level of the library located at 245 Lake Street. The sale will feature best-sellers, fiction, and nonfiction, DVDs, CDs, videos, and audio books. There is also a set of 50 leather bound classics available for purchase. Gently-used books and media may be donated during regular library hours. For more information, call (201) 327-2583. Library announces events The Upper Saddle River Library will offer two programs for adults in May. The programs are free and open to the public. The library is located at 245 Lake Street. Patricia Woods will present a discussion on spiritual mediums on Monday, May 6 at 7 p.m. Woods will answer questions from the audience and communicate with the spirit world for several participants chosen at random. On May 9, interior decorator and designer Roseann Kearney will discuss her book, “A Decorator’s Tales by the Yard: Memoirs of a New Jersey Decorator.” Kearney’s book details true stories of a decorator’s journey with her clients. Kearney, who has been designing and decorating homes and offices for 38 years, is self-taught and is preparing to launch her own custom furniture line. Books will be available for sale. Social skills group to meet The Young Adult Social Skills Group will meet on Monday, May 6 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library at 245 Lake Street. The group offers an
opportunity for children with special needs to socialize over games, discuss a favorite book, or simply have a place to create friendships and share experiences common to teens in grades eight through 12. Book discussion groups to meet Novels at Night will discuss Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Notes from the Underground” on May 1 at the Upper Saddle River Library. This evening book group meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. On May 16, Coffee Talk will discuss Chad Harback’s “The Art of Fielding.” This group meets at the library at 10 a.m. on the second Thursday of the month. Fishing Derby announced The Upper Saddle Recreation Commission will host its Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 4 at Liberty Park. The event will be held between 9 a.m. and noon. All Upper Saddle River residents, ages five and up, are invited to bring their fishing poles and bait. Bucky Rehain will be hand to offer assistance to participants during the derby. Rehain will walk around the pond and provide answers to many questions about various fish and wildlife issues. USR Cleanup Day slated Individuals, families, teams, and organizations are invited to Upper Saddle River’s Town-wide Cleanup Day: Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. reation Commission. Participants should check in at Lions Park anytime between 8 a.m. and noon. Volunteers will be assigned (or may choose) an area to clean. Areas include: Lions Park, Hess Park, and school grounds. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Coffee, juice, and doughnuts will be available. Please note that participating children must be supervised by an adult. Church hosts directed retreat The Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will co-sponsor a directed retreat with Saint Paul’s Church of Ramsey during the week of May 11 through 18. The retreat will begin and end with a group meeting on May 11 and 18 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. At the first meet-
ing, there will be a 15-minute simulation of a spiritual direction session. During the week, Monday through Friday, each person will meet with his or her spiritual director privately for 30 minutes daily at a mutually convenient time. Participants will be asked to spend at least 30 minutes in prayer each day. There is no charge, but a freewill offering may be made at the last group meeting.
