The announcement was made at during the kick-off fundraiser, which was held at the Allendale Bar & Grill. AB&G is donating a percentage of the proceeds from the kick-off event to the Hackensack UMC Foundation to benefit Susan’s Suite. McGraw Communications is owned by Saddle River residents Frank Ahearn and John Cunningham, and provides voice, data, and IP communications technologies and solutions. “We had the pleasure of knowing Sue for many years and are so proud to honor her by supporting Susan’s Suite at Hackensack UMC,” said Ahearn. Susan’s Suite is part of the expansion of the Emergency & Trauma Center that is under way at HUMC. The suite is a specialized emergency section created to address the unique needs of cancer patients. It is open and currently functions as a four-bed temporary suite that serves emergency room patients with all types of cancer. When the renovation is complete in 2015, Susan’s Suite will provide a dedicated 10-bed emergency cancer care pod. The April 27 run will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a USATF certified 5K family run/walk sponsored by The Friends of Hackensack University Medical Center and the Hughes and Zabransky families in memory of Saddle River resident Susan Zabransky Hughes, who lost her battle with cervical cancer in July 2011 at the age of 46. Registration for the run/walk is available now at www. HackensackUMCFoundation.org. Post-race activities will include an awards ceremony and a $100 cash prize for the overall top female and top male runners. Refreshments, massage, and chiropractic adjustments will also be available. In addition, children’s games and activities will be provided by Wandell’s own Coach Jeff Kresch. These activities will take place on the grounds of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River. Resource officer (continued from page 5) Major decreases in the budget include a drop of $112,206 in administration, including salary decreases, the replacement of a retiree by a part-time employee, and other cost reductions; and $12,104 in benefits costs, which have decreased due to employee health benefit contributions. Ferrara characterized the budget as fiscally responsible. She pointed out that the district shares services with the municipality and with other schools, maintains a low administrative cost per pupil, receives grants from various entities – including the Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation, and leases the school’s facilities. The district has also saved money by refunding its debt service. In addition to maintaining a AA credit rating from Standard & Poor’s, the refunding will allow taxpayers to save over $66,000 per year, or a total of $1.1 million, from 2013 to 2029. In addition, the debt service payment for 2013-14 will decrease by another $6,006 beyond the $66,000 in 2012-13. The debt service tax levy is budgeted at $677,393. The tax levy for 2013-14 will be $11,968,169, state aid will remain at $448,291, and budgeted surplus will total $360,900. The budget also includes a federal grant of $148,445. No public vote will be taken on this budget, as the increase to the operating budget falls under the statemandated cap, which is currently two percent. Last year, the state allowed districts that chose to move their school board elections from spring to the date of the November general election to forego the public vote on the school budget as long as the spending plan falls below the prescribed cap.
