Republican council candidates sought The Saddle River Republican Club is seeking candidates for this June’s primary election. Two borough council seats will be available. Prospective candidates may apply for the club’s endorsement by contacting SRRC President Amy Fisher in writing by Thursday, March 28. E-mails may be sent to EB4BLUES@AOL.COM. Club to host Fashion Show On April 19, the Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will host a Spring Fashion Show at Neiman Marcus at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus. The event will benefit the Upper Saddle River Volunteer Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial Fund. The fire department’s 9/11 Memorial will include a seven-foot, 1,464-pound piece of steel salvaged from the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The memorial, currently in the design phase, will be built
entirely from memorial fund donations. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., show attendees may preview the season’s latest trends. Tickets are $50 and include the show, light fare, and refreshments. Book discussion groups to meet The Novels at Night book group will discuss Kristen Iversen’s “Full Body Burden” on Wednesday, April 3. The group meets at the Upper Saddle River Library on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. On April 18, the Coffee Talk book group will hold a discussion on Hillary Jordan’s “Mudbound” at 10 a.m. Copies of the books are available at the circulation desk. Club hosts ‘Treasure Sale’ benefit The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will host its Treasure Sale at the Upper Saddle River Fire Department, 375 West Saddle River Road, on April 27. This sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. American Gold & Diamond Buyers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members
of the community are invited to bring their unwanted gold to sell. Parents are encouraged to bring a camera and take photos of their children with an Upper Saddle River fire truck and enjoy the homemade treats that will be sold. Donations of gently-used items in good condition may be dropped off on Friday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the morning of the sale at the USR Fire House. Lenten programs and services announced Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church welcomes the community to several Lenten events and programs. On Maundy Thursday, March 28, BHUMC will present a reenactment of the Last Supper at 7:30 p.m. This program will be held at BHUMC and will include the congregations of the United Methodist churches in Park Ridge, Waldwick, and Allendale. A 7:30 p.m. service will be held on Holy Thursday, March 28. There will be a 10
a.m. Lenten Prayer Vigil on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. On March 31, the Easter Sunday service will be held at 11 a.m. Bergen Highlands is located at 318 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. The church holds weekly worship services throughout the year on Sunday at 11 a.m. with Sunday school provided for children. Club announces events The winners of the Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River’s 27th Annual Poetry & Essay contests will gather at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River, on April 3. The contestants will read their entries beginning at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. On April 4, the club will participate in the Lord & Taylor Spring Benefit Bash. While he was a den chief, he ran the Cub Scout opening fall campfire and skits for new Cubs and was the featured speaker at the Blue and Gold Dinner talking about the Boy Scout program and his experiences as a Scout. Ryan is known in the Troop for his culinary skills and memorable meals on numerous campouts. He has been active in Northern Highlands sports, including winter track, cross country, football, and swimming and has played recreational soccer and basketball throughout his school years. He is a member of many clubs, including the Italian Club, Model UN, DECA, and RYLA. He is an altar server and lector at Masses at Saint Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in Ho-Ho-Kus. For his Eagle Scout project, he painted house numbers on curbs throughout Ho-Ho-Kus to benefit emergency first responders.
