Board approves trips, observers
by John Koster The Allendale Board of Education has approved several field trips for K-8 school staff members, and has approved supervised observation of Hillside School students by Northern Highlands Regional High School students who want to become teachers. Superintendent of Schools Michael Barcadepone had recently paid his own way to three seminars or workshops. The first was the Superintendent Study Council Program Commissioner Cerf’s Presentation on Implementation of New Tenure Performance Law at Seton Hall University in South Orange. The second was the Regional Education Evaluation Presentation at the Morris County Firefighters & Police Academy in Parsippany. The third, on March 20, is the BCASA Winter Leadership Conference at Bergen County Catholic Academy in Paramus. Hillside School Art Teacher Mauricio Souza paid his own way to a seminar at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The program was entitled “Teach Europe Therapies and other charities selected by AWC. Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet on Monday, March 25 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Brookside School Library, located at 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. Trinity announces Holy Week services The Trinity Episcopal Church in Allendale, located at 55 George Street in Allendale, will hold special services for Holy Week. On Palm/Passion Sunday, March 24, there will be a Said Eucharist at 8 a.m. and a Choral Eucharist service at 10 a.m. On Good Friday, March 29, services will be held at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Both of these services will include Communion from the Reserved Sacrament. On Easter Sunday, March 31, a Said Eucharist will be offered at 8 a.m. A Choral Eucharist will be held at 10 a.m., followed by an Easter Brunch (continental buffet) and an Easter Egg Hunt. For more information, call (201) 327-3012. Thrift shop features spring inventory The Clothes Line Thrift Shop at Archer United Methodist Church recently changed its inventory over to its spring line. There is a good supply of clothing and jewelry. The shop recently received museum quality art prints featuring the work of Claude Monet, Pierre Renoir, Frederick Childe Hassam, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Henry Ashbury Rand, and Theodore Wendel, and Valley Vista California Pottery (c. 1950) dishes. The shop’s 45th Annual Attic, Basement & Garage Sale will be held Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Thrift Shop is located in the Archer United Methodist Church at 37 East Allendale Avenue in Allendale. Hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Thrift

Workshop: Strategies for Using Online Technology in Communicative Language Classroom.” School Business Administrator John Boreman was covered by subscription to a conference on school business administration at the Hilton Gardens in Rockaway, New Jersey at no cost to local taxpayers. Seven Allendale K-8 teachers will attend a May seminar, “Ready, Writing, and Research in the Content Areas,” at Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City at a cost of $75 each. The teachers attending the enrichment seminar are Alison Baier, Clair Barnett, Cathy Danahy, Susan Goldsmith, Tracy Lewis, Liz Walker, and Ellen Vivino. The Allendale Board of Education also approved the supervised academic contributions of two Northern Highlands students at Hillside School. Northern Highlands’ Rachel Lee will work under the mentorship of Wendy Nadel, and Sarah Kim will work under the mentorship of Susan Clauss. Both Lee and Kim have expressed an interest in a future career in teaching and participate in the Tomorrow’s Teacher program at Highlands. Shop will be closed March 29 and 30. New and gently-used items may be donated during regular shop hours. Rotary offers scholarships The Allendale-Saddle River Rotary Foundation will award two scholarships of $1,500 each to high school seniors who live in Allendale, Saddle River, or Upper Saddle River, and plan to attend a four-year college. At a recent ceremony, AAA North Jersey presented Allendale officials with an AAA Award of Excellence. The award is presented to communities with outstanding traffic safety program activities. The Allendale Police Department combats aggressive driving and other traffic offenses through enforcement and educational activities in the community. Easter Egg Hunt set The Allendale/Waldwick PBA Local 217 will hold its 19th Annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Waldwick High School Turf Football Field on March 23. (Rain date: March 30.) The event will begin at 10 a.m. and run until all the eggs are found. Admission is free. Children from Allendale and Waldwick will be grouped by age into the following categories: Toddler through kindergarten, children in grades one through three, and students in grades four and five. Participants will hunt for candy, and will have the opportunity to win prizes. The Easter Bunny will be on hand to pose for photos with the children. Club sells spring flowers The Allendale Woman’s Club’s Annual Geranium/ Impatiens Sale is now under way and will continue through April 20. This year, geraniums are available in red, white, light pink, dark pink, and splash (pink and white). Impatiens are available in red, white, and light pink. The cost is $38 per dozen, and $24 for a half dozen. The minimum order required of each variety is a half dozen.
