Club announces events The winners of the Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River’s 27th Annual Poetry & Essay contests will gather at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River, on April 3. The contestants will read their entries beginning at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. On April 4, the club will participate in the Lord & Taylor Spring Benefit Bash. Presentation seniors meet The Senior Club of Presentation Church in Upper Saddle River invites individuals who are age 55 and older to the group’s March 12 meeting. Participants will meet at 9:45 a.m. in the community room at the church located at 271 West Saddle River Road. The club will hear a talk by the owner of the Old ‘76 House in Tappan, New York. The Old ’76 House is one of America’s oldest taverns, and General George Washington often stayed there. The building also served as the prison for the Revolutionary War’s most notorious spy, Major John Andre. There will be a special contest for two tickets for dinner at the tavern. Library offers varied programs Consumer finance expert Rick Feingold will visit the Upper Saddle River Library on April 2 to present a demonstration showing the tricks of the trade for buying and selling on the Internet. The program will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The discussion will include tips on selling household items and cars on Craigslist; selling books, DVDs, and CDs on Amazon; saving 40 to 50 percent on hotels using Hotwire and Priceline; and earning free flights and shopping for new and low-mileage pre-owned cars on the Internet. On Sunday, April 28 the library will hold an antique
appraisal from 2 to 4 p.m. Alan Snyder, a certified antiques and estate appraiser from A.G. Snyder & Associates, will be at the library to make the appraisals. Attendees are invited to bring up to two treasures and find out what they are worth. Items may include furniture, silver, jewelry, prints, paintings, photographs, hand tools, and household goods. In addition to the appraisals, Snyder will discuss the current antiques and collectibles marketplace and collecting trends. This program is limited to 40 attendees. Susan’s Suite benefit set The Allendale Bar and Grill, 67 West Allendale Avenue in Allendale, will sponsor a March 11 fundraiser to benefit Susan’s Suite at Hackensack University Medical Center. The day of the fundraiser, the restaurant will donate a portion of its proceeds from 11 a.m. to closing to Susan’s Suite. The main benefit for Susan’s Suite is the Susan Zabransky Hughes 5K Memorial Run/Walk, which will be held on April 27. Registration for the annual run is now under way. BHUMC offers CareerWorks Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church hosts the CareerWorks Catalyst Job Club on the first and third Sunday of the month. The group meets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church located at 318 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Members are offered suggestions and direction based on individual employment or unemployment situations. Registration is required. Call (201) 327-3069 to confirm that the group is meeting. ‘Town Night Out’ tickets available The Upper Saddle River Education Foundation will celebrate a decade of fundraising with a masquerade gala set for March 9 at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton in Woodcliff Lake. This year’s event will feature a cocktail party with international food stations, an open bar, Viennese table, dancing, entertainment, and special auctions. The evening will begin at 7 p.m.

Established in 2003, the USREF is a non-profit, community based organization that seeks to provide opportunities for creative teaching and learning experiences. To date, the USREF has funded over 100 grants totaling in excess of $565,000. The foundation has made contributions to Reynolds, Bogert, and Cavallini schools, including a stateof-the-art wellness center; the Learning Habitat, which provides a living outdoor classroom; and a fully operational TV production studio. ‘Meet Your Spirit’ at BHUMC Beginning March 6, Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church, 318 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, will present a five-week series on spirituality. The program is open to all, including those who may have departed from formal religious organizations, but remain spiritual. There are no prerequisites and no obligation whatsoever. Refreshments will be served. Upcoming discussions will include “Nurture Your Spirit, Nurture Your Life,” “Religion? Try the Store Brand,” “Faith, Reason, Morality,” “Church Walls: The Honest Truth,” and “The Spirit Behind Every Face.” The church’s book discussion series will meet on March 7 and 21 to discuss Adam Hamilton’s “Why? Making Sense of God’s Will” The group meets at 7:30 p.m. at Archer United Methodist Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue in Allendale. Club plans events The Out to Lunch group of the Saddle River Valley Residents Club will meet for lunch at Bacari Grill in Paramus on March 7. The group’s International Club has planned luncheon for March 14, and the Sociable Supper members will meet on Saturday, March 23. Other upcoming activities sponsored by the organization include a Gracie Mansion Tea Tour in New York City planned for April 17, and the SRVRC’s Spring Ball set for April 27 at the Brownstone in Paterson.
