Board of education announces summer meetings The Allendale Board of Education will meet on Mondays, July 15 and Aug. 19 this summer. The meetings are held at 8 p.m. in the Brookside School Library located at 100 Brookside Avenue. Chamber of commerce plans July meeting The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will meet on Tuesday, July 9. The noon luncheon will be held at Savini’s Restaurant, 168 West Crescent Avenue. RSVP to Adrienne Tenbekjian at (201) 327-8411. The Chamber meets the second Tuesday of the month. Independence Day celebration set Allendale residents and their guests are invited to celebrate Independence Day with festivities planned for Thursday, July 4. (Rain date: July 6.) The day will begin at 7 a.m. with a flag raising and morning salute at Memorial Park. The ceremony will be conducted by the Boy and Girls Scouts of Allendale. A full day of activities and entertainment at Crestwood Park has been planned by the Holiday Observers. Registration will be held from 8 to 8:30 a.m. at the grandstand, where a host of athletic events will take place. Children may participate in a lollipop race; three-legged race; sack race; 50-, 60-, 75-, and 100-yard dashes; crab race; waterfall race; softball and football throws; and the running broad jump. Children will be grouped by age. Awards will be presented for first through fourth place winners. Activities for adults will include the Walt Anderson Memorial Fun Run (1.5 miles), a ladies’ rolling pin throw, water balloon toss, and men’s horseshoe pitching contest. The all-star baseball and softball games will begin at 1 p.m. There will be a band concert at 7:30 p.m., and the fireworks display will follow at 9 p.m. Admission to the fireworks is by ticket only. Rotary hosts Benefit Mondays The Allendale Saddle River Rotary Club will hold Benefit Mondays this month at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza located at 984 State Route 17 in Ramsey. Diners who mention the Allendale Saddle River Rotary Club to their server will have a portion of their dining bill donated by the restaurant to the club. The Allendale Saddle River Rotary Club supports local non-profits and offers scholarships to local high school students through its fundraising efforts. The organization is the parent club to The Northern Highlands Interact Club, a Rotary-sponsored service organization for high school

Book Sale benefits library The Lee Memorial Library holds an ongoing sale of used books in the lobby during regular hours. Fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, tapes, and videos are available at bargain prices. The books are priced from 25 cents to $1. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Proceeds go directly to the library for purchase of new materials. Knitters and crocheters welcome new members Knitters and crocheters are invited to Stitch n’ Chat at the Lee Memorial Library on the third Monday of the month. The group meets at 7 p.m. in the loft. Participants of all skill levels are welcome to bring their projects. Refreshments are served. The library is located at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Shmoop now available The Lee Memorial Library at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale now offers the Shmoop database. Shmoop allows residents to prep for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams, and offers study guides for literature, Bible, poetry, Shakespeare, mythology, best-sellers, Dr. Seuss, pre-algebra, algebra, algebra II, geometry, biology, U.S. history flashcards, DMV, and careers. Library offers investment research center The Lee Memorial Library now has Morningstar, Inc. online available to Lee Memorial Library patrons. This investment research center offers an extensive line of products and services for individuals, financial advisors, and institutions. Designed specifically for libraries, Morningstar Investment Research Center is an easy-to-navigate online database with comprehensive data and analysis of over 41,000 investments. To access the program from home, visit allendale.bccls. org or visit the library to use the resource from a public computer. The library is located at 500 West Crescent Avenue. Volunteers sought The volunteer nursing home outreach program, Growing Relationships and Making Memories, is seeking volunteers to form relationships with socially isolated nursing home residents.
Many nursing home residents have no one to visit them. Similar to a Big Brother/Big Sister philosophy, GRAMM builds individual relationships through activities such as sharing stories, playing games, reading, watching sports/ television, sitting outside, writing letters, or just offering companionship. GRAMM is seeking volunteers who can visit one hour a week for eight weeks. The program is held at the Allendale Nursing Home in Allendale. Free museum passes available The Lee Memorial Library, located at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale, has free passes for the American Museum of Natural History and the Montclair Museum in Montclair available to Allendale patrons. Each family is allowed up to four passes into the American Museum of Natural History. A deposit is not required. To obtain passes for the Montclair Museum, a $40 deposit is required when a pass is picked up. The deposit is refunded when the pass is returned. Two passes are available. XYZ Club meets The XYZ Senior Citizens Club of Allendale meets on the first and third Friday of the month at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 165 West Crescent Avenue at 11 a.m. Allendale residents who would like to participate in club activities are welcome. Free health consultations offered The Bergen County Department of Health Services offers a free health consultation program in the Allendale for adult residents. Staffed by a public health nurse, guidance and referral services are provided for health maintenance. Monitoring of health history, and height, weight, and blood pressure checks are offered at each visit. Residents are assured of complete confidentiality of health information. Library offers notification service The Lee Memorial Library is now keeping track of new books published by a list of authors and will notify interested patrons when new books are published and put books on hold for patrons who have subscribed to the new service. Choose from a list of 12 popular fiction and mystery authors. Stop by the library and select favorite authors any time the library is open.
