June 19, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Saddle River Valley Upper Saddle River Mayor Joanne Minichetti was recently the guest speaker at the Bergen Highlands/Ramsey Rotary Club. Mayor Minichetti discussed the Bronze Certification Upper Saddle River received under the Sustainable Jersey NJ Healthy Town program. The borough has been involved in a Seaside Heights relief collection effort, has started a town leadership group, received a Rain Garden Grant, and recently launched a website, srvcares.com, that is designed to allow residents to donate and distribute items to various charities. The interim superintendent also helped usher in the new teacher evaluation system, and assisted with scheduling changes and other issues related to Hurricane Sandy, which hit the area on Oct. 29, 2012. The storm left many without power, and left the schools closed for several days. DeYoung received A.B. (summa cum laude) and M.A. degrees in mathematics from Montclair State University, and pursued graduate studies in educational administration at William Paterson University, Jersey City State College, and Teachers College at Columbia University. He is certified in the State of New Jersey as a school administrator, principal, supervisor, and secondary school mathematics teacher. He has served as a math instructor at Montclair State University, William Paterson University, and at Bergen Community College. He taught math and computer science at Indian Hills High School in Oakland from 1968 to 1979 before he became math supervisor for the Ramsey public schools. He served Ramsey as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction from 1984 through 1991, after which time he became the district’s superintendent of schools. He remained in that post from January 1992 through December 2005. DeYoung will be succeeded by Dr. Matthew J. Murphy. Ramsey High serves Ramsey and Saddle River.
