Maria Donadio Bolton has resigned from the Upper Saddle River K-8 Board of Education, effective immediately. Bolton, who notified the board of her resignation on June 5, will be moving out of the district. The board is now accepting applications for Bolton’s seat. Upper Saddle River voters will have a choice of three school board candidates on Nov. 5, when two seats will be available in the general election. As of last week’s filing deadline, incumbent Dante Ferrarie announced his candidacy, as did Elizabeth Pittman and David Verducci. Ferrarie won election to the board in 2007 and was reelected to a new term in 2010. He is currently serving as the board’s president. Pittman is a 12-year resident with a daughter who attends the local schools. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has been employed as a corporate sales executive for 15 years. She has been active with the Parent Teacher Organization and the Junior Woman’s Club. She is an 11year member of the JCO, which she served as a trustee

for seven years. She has also served two years on the board of the local after school program. She served as treasurer of the local Brownie Troop and is now a coleader for Juniors. Verducci, a 10-year borough resident, spent 38 years as a professional educator. He retired in 2012. While serving as superintendent in Glen Rock, he led that district to a #4 overall ranking and #1 ranking among District Factor Group J schools in New Jersey Monthly’s 2012 Top 100 Public High Schools. He was named Northern Region School Superintendent of the Year in 2011. Verducci is a member of the Saddle River Valley Lions Club and participates in the fundraising efforts of the Upper Saddle River Education Foundation. He holds four university degrees, including a Ph.D. from New York University.

According to the law, school board candidates must be able to read and write and must hold U.S. citizenship and a minimum of one year of residence in the school district. Candidates may not have any interest in any contract with, or claim against, the board, and may not hold office as mayor or a member of the governing body in the same district. Candidates must also be registered to vote in the district, and must not be disqualified as a voter under N.J.S.A. 19:4-1. Bolton was sworn in to the unexpired term of Dr. Jill Stoller in June of 2012. Bolton then ran for election to Stoller’s term in the 2012 general election. The trustee, who grew up in Oakland, has lived in Upper Saddle River for 13 years with her husband and three children. Her daughters, Emma and Lilly, have already gone through the K-8 public school system, and are attending college and high school, respectively. Bolton’s son, Jack, is in eighth grade. Bolton attended Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township and received a BA in communications from Marist College. Prior to staying home to raise her children, she was employed by National Office Supply. She currently works part time for a local pediatrician. She is a parishioner at Saint Gabriel the Archangel Church in Saddle River, where she has taught religious education for over 12 years. Bolton has been active in the Upper Saddle River schools for many years and is a past vice president of the PTO board. Bolton stepped in to the seat previously held by Dr. Stoller, who was elected to a one-year unexpired term in 2006. Stoller was subsequently elected to full three-year terms in 2007 and in 2010.
