The Waldwick Library saw a slight decline in circulation in 2012 over the previous year but still maintained a high level of patron interest. Councilman Don Sciolaro reported during last week’s meeting of the mayor and council that 148,810 collection items circulated in 2012 versus a circulation of 160,000 in 2011. “It’s one of the high years. It was a very successful year despite problems,” Sciolaro said. More than 100,000 people visited the library in 2012, he said. The adult circulation, including books, audio, DVD, music CDs and periodicals, was 85,756, with a juvenile/young adult circulation of 63,054. There were 934 downloads from BCCLS and the digital library. The problems were many, Sciolaro said, including a building project and the loss of power for more than a week due to Hurricane Sandy. The meeting room was closed for months while the construction was underway, and completion was further delayed until the original contractor was declared in default and the bonding company had to take over to get the project finished. And then HVAC and other issues delayed full enjoyment of the new facilities, even though they were functional. Programming for children and adults is now is full swing, Sciolaro said, and patrons appreciate the improved facilities. The library board of trustees reorganized recently and elected the following officers: David Marino, president; Rick Vander Wende, vice president; Bill Smithuysen, treasurer; Jo Ann Mitchell, corresponding secretary; Sciolaro, recording secretary and mayor’s alternate. Also on the board are David Fytelson, trustee; and Diane Chambers, superintendent of schools’ alternate. Meetings of the Board of Trustees are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the library.
