Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • January 30, 2013 Saddle River Valley Event organizers have announced that the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5K Run/Walk will be held on April 27. The course for this event is USATF certified. Participants will assemble at 8:30 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church at 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River. Post race events will also be held at the church. The day will begin with the 5K family run/walk sponsored by The Friends of Hackensack University Medical Center and the Hughes and Zabransky families in memory of Saddle River resident Susan Zabransky Hughes who lost her battle with cervical cancer in July 2011 at the age of 46. Post-race activities for children and families will include an awards ceremony, children’s activities, refreshments, and more. Proceeds from this event will benefit “Susan’s Suite,” a Memorial Run/Walk scheduled for April 27 Susan Zabransky Hughes dedicated treatment suite for all cancer patients in the soon to be renovated Emergency & Trauma Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. Online registration is encouraged. The fee is $25 per person. That fee will rise to $30 on race day and at the onsite registration. For registration, sponsorship, or other information about the 5K, visit www.HackensackUMCFoundation.org or contact Cindy Martins at (551) 996-3634. This memorial run was established in 2012 as a way for Zabransky Hughes’ survivors to remember this avid marathoner, hiker, and cook. Those who knew Zabransky Hughes decided to raise money to build “Susan’s Suite” at HUMCenter. Last year, Bob Hughes explained that his wife had been treated at HUMC’s John Theurer Cancer Center. While he waited with her in the emergency room on several occasions, he saw the need for an emergency treatment area that would be dedicated to the needs of cancer patients. The goal, he said, is to have a 10-bed, cancer-only emergency room with its own staff and private rooms to streamline the treatment effort. While Susan’s Suite is intended as a tribute to Zabransky Hughes, the suite will benefit anyone with cancer. A sum of $1 million has been pledged to the hospital, and fundraising efforts are now under way to help cover the cost. Raised in Upper Saddle River, Zabransky Hughes was an avid runner. In 2006, she completed her second New York City Marathon. Friends said she smiled her way through the race, which she ran to raise money for cancer patients. A friend remembered Zabransky Hughes as a beautiful, bright, and devoted wife and mother of two who embraced life and saw every day as an adventure. Zabransky Hughes enjoyed hiking, and she and her dog often explored Ramapo Reservation. She was active with the Wandell School Education Foundation, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saddle River, and Pony Power in Mahwah. She spent many hours volunteering to help children and members of her community.
