Thrift Shop features antique dishes The Clothes Line Thrift Shop recently added antique dishes from the early 1900s to its household inventory, in addition to the racks of new clothing for women, men, and children. The Thrift Shop is located in the Archer United Methodist Church at 37 East Allendale Avenue in Allendale. Shop hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and selected Saturdays. New and gently used items may be donated during regular shop hours. Lenten events, Holy Week services set Highlands Presbyterian Church will begin its Lenten observances. The church’s traditional soup and bread suppers will start on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the Ash Wednesday worship service. These suppers will continue every Wednesday at 6 p.m. through March 20, followed by the study series Living into Lent. The program was developed by Presbyterian theologian, educator, and author Donald McKim. Those interested in attending are asked to bring a soup bowl and spoon and join the group for warm fellowship. An offering will be taken up for the church’s mission treasury. During Holy Week, a seder will be held on Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 6 p.m. The Good Friday service on March 29, will be held at 8 p.m. On March 31, the Easter Sunday service will begin at 10 a.m. Highlands Presbyterian Church is located at 270 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale. Weekly worship services are held on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m., with child care and Sunday school provided. Spinelli to address civic group Ben Spinelli, adjunct professor of political science at William Paterson and Kean universities, will discuss nonpartisan forms of local government at the Feb. 7 meeting of the Allendale Civic Association. This 8 p.m. session
will be held in the council chambers on the second floor of the Allendale Municipal Building at 500 West Crescent Avenue. All are invited. Fyke plans Teatown Hudson River Eaglefest trip On Feb. 9, Fyke Nature Association will host a trip to the Teatown Hudson River Eaglefest at Croton Pont Park in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. Republican council candidates sought Two Allendale Council seats will be available this year, and candidates for the June primary election are now being sought. Prospective candidates may apply for the endorsement of the Allendale Republican Organization by contacting Bob Pash at Allendale.repubpc@gmail.com before Feb. 20. Interested candidates should provide a brief biography and statement as to their interest and qualifications for a council seat. Applicants must be registered Republicans in order to be considered at the annual convention of the Allendale Republican Organization. Fashion Show set; sponsors sought The Allendale Woman’s Club will host its Spring Fashion Show, “Spring Promise,” at Seasons in Washington Township on April 3. The evening will feature a cocktail reception and gourmet dinner, prize gift baskets, and fashions presented by The Figleaf. Family Promise is the only organization in the county helping working families overcome temporary
homelessness. The Fashion Show Committee is seeking sponsors, ads for the show’s program, and donations of prizes. Becoming a sponsor, placing a message of support in the program, or donating goods or services for the basket giveaway will aid families in the area and catch the attention of over 450 show attendees. Military Bridge to benefit Project Graduation The Northern Highlands Senior Class of 2013 will host a Military Bridge fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 in the Northern Highlands High School cafeteria, located at 298 Hillside Avenue in Allendale. The evening will feature cards, prize baskets, homemade desserts, and refreshments. The card game is simple and can be learned at the event. Tickets, which are available in advance, are $12 each or $40 for a table of four. Tickets purchased at the door will be $15. AFEE plans annual fundraiser The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc. will host its 18th Annual Auction on Friday, March 15 at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel. This year’s event will feature mystery board prizes, prize baskets, a cash prize contest, and an auction. All proceeds directly benefit enrichment programs and innovative technology for Allendale’s public schools. Tickets are $75 per person and include dinner, wine, beer, and dancing.
