Jamie Hillgardner of Cresskill, 25, holds two college degrees, including a master’s degree in criminal justice from Saint John’s University. She participated in the NYPD Police Cadet Corps. She has become the first female officer since Ann Kanze retired from the Allendale Police Department in the 1980s. Kevin Azevedo, 34, is a graduate of Mahwah High School and holds a master’s degree in education from Montclair State University. He also has a degree in physical education from Montclair. Council members and police officers were pleased with the new hires, part of a gradual process of covering the retirements of veteran officers at the top of the pay scale with younger officers at the beginning of the pay scale. Two more police officers are expected to be on board next year. This will not only give Allendale a younger force at lower salaries, but will also reduce police overtime for a long-term saving to borough taxpayers. The two new officers will begin their careers at $35,000 a year and take on police duties after six months at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute and six months of supervised patrol work teamed with experienced officers. Staffed by a public health nurse, guidance and referral services are provided for health maintenance. Monitoring Free health consultations offered of health history, and height, weight, and blood pressure checks are offered at each visit. Students from the Locola Music Studio recently presented a Winter String Concert in Allendale. Fifteen students, ages four to 15, serenaded the audience at the Allendale Community for Mature Living. The ensemble performed Vivaldi’s ‘Spring,’ the ‘Jesse Polka,’ and ‘Trepak’ from Tschaikowsky’s ‘The Nutcracker Suite.’ Highlights included solo recitals by Julianna Davino, Ben Yankowitz, and Marina Pitrelli.
