Sarantos to perform Native American flute concert
Renowned Native American flute instructor John Sarantos will present a free concert at the Upper Saddle River Library at 2 p.m. on Jan. 13. Sarantos will perform against a slide show backdrop of serene nature photographs, and will play a variety of Native American and world flutes. All are welcome. The lbrary is located at 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. For 13 years, Sarantos has facilitated with Ken Light and R. Carlos Nakai at the Renaissance of the Native American Flute workshop in Montana. He was the first to receive the prestigious Naja Award from Nakai for his work in promoting the renaissance of the Native American flute. In 2012, he recorded on Robert Lee Revue’s second
album, City of Smooth Jazz and joined the world fusion band, Sun Shadows. Their second album, Journey to the Sun, will be released in 2013. He is a member of the flute duo, NightDancers, with Gera Clark; their debut release, Montana Crossings, was nominated for a 2008 Indian Summer Music Award in the Best Native Spirit category. Sarantos teaches flute around the country. During January and February, his flute classes, concerts, and miniconcerts are being hosted in New York City by The Open Center, the Healing Arts & Yoga Center, and in Ossining at the Maryknoll Society. As of press time, his free concert at the Upper Saddle River Library is his only New Jersey performance.
