Saddle River
Pizzarelli’s paintings, guitar performance converge
World-renowned jazz guitarist John “Bucky” Pizzarelli of Saddle River will be playing, surrounded by his own artwork, at an open reception with refreshments on Feb. 23. This special program will be held at the Ridgewood Art Institute, 12 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood, from 2 to 4 pm. Pizzarelli’s paintings reflect memories of his childhood and a diary of his travels as a musician. The subjects of his paintings include Historic Paterson at the time the silk mills were in full production, the Paterson Falls, the Paterson skyline, Switzerland, Italy, London, and Brazil. These pieces will remain on exhibit until March 8. Pizzarelli’s numerous worldwide music tours have included performances with practically every jazz legend, including
Stephane Grapelli, Rosemary Clooney, Benny Carter, Michael Feinstein, and Charlie Byrd. He has made hundreds of jazz recordings with every major jazz great, including his own solo albums and work with his two sons, John and Martin Pizzarelli. At age 86, he remains constantly in demand all over the country. He is one of the very first musicians in New Jersey to have two of his guitars, along with a recorded history of his lifetime in music, included in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. Pizzarelli paints in a small studio in his basement as a major source of relaxation. For more information, visit www.ridgewoodartinstitute.org or call (201) 652-9615.

The Upper Saddle River Library Board of Trustees recently welcomed Kathleen McGrail as the new library director. Although new to the role of director, McGrail is no stranger to the Upper Saddle River Library. She began her career at the borough’s library in 1999, starting out as the assistant in the children’s department. Some patrons will remember her from story hour and her renditions of “Open Shut Them” and the “Goodbye Library” songs.
Upper Saddle River Library names McGrail as director
Inspired by prior Library Director Barbara Kruger, McGrail attended Rutgers University, achieving her MLIS in 2006. After a brief stint in the public school, McGrail returned to the Upper Saddle River Library in 2008, working first as the young adult librarian and for the last twoand-a-half years as the assistant director. McGrail said she is excited to take on the director’s role and looks forward to keeping the Upper Saddle River Public Library the heart of the community.
