awakens each student’s spirit of confidence and enthusiasm. “Over the years of teaching at various colleges and universities, I have seen a lot of college students with some serious gaps in their basic cognitive and academic skills. Unfortunately, these weaknesses blocked many of them from reaching their potential and become successful in their lives. These problems can be resolved easier and faster at earlier stages, so I decided to open Grade Power Learning in order to help kids to have a strong cognitive and academic foundation and ultimately have more fruitful lives,” Work Smarter, Not Harder! says owner Reza Farahani, who holds a Ph.D. in psychology from City College of CUNY. “Our core belief at Grade Power Learning is that learning and school, like living, can be passionate, joyful, and positive experiences. We can change the world for the better, one child at a time!” Grade Power focuses on coaching rather than tutoring. Reza explains that helping a student with his or her school work may help the student get better grades, but it is a temporary fix and the student will always need help. Grade Power provides permanent solutions by changing how students integrate and process information. “This is called cognitive development and it is only delivered by Grade Power Learning,” Reza adds. He notes that Grade Power students see immediate, observable progress, such as better academic skills and improved self-esteem. As time progresses, students develop new cognitive skills that enable them to deal with the root causes of their academic challenges. Grade Power is located at 33 West Allendale Avenue (Allendale Shopping Plaza). For more information, call (201) 962-7777 or visit www.gradepowerlearning.com.
lyde’s, known for generations for its delicious homemade ice cream and Italian ices, is now open at 86 West Allendale Avenue in Allendale. Tim and Fatima Devens own this 100-year old business, which was established by a man named Clyde, and later sold to Tim’s family. As a teen, Tim worked for his uncle’s location in Garfield, where all of the ice cream and Italian ices are made. Thirty years ago, Tim took over the Garfield location. Since then, additional family members and friends have opened Clyde’s shops. Now, Tim’s wife, Fatima, runs the AllenClyde’s dale shop. All of the ice cream and ices are made from scratch from an original recipe handed down by Clyde himself. Tim notes that old-timers who have enjoyed Clyde’s products for many years tell him these sweet treats still taste like they used to. However, Tim has done some creative tinkering with the recipes, expanding the flavor options. One ice cream tastes like a popular type of cream-filled chocolate cake, and another tastes like a well-known golden cake filled with sweet cream. Try the salted caramel pretzel ice cream or the espresso chip, or stick with Clyde’s best-sellers: chocolate, vanilla, and chocolate chip mint. Seasonal flavors include pumpkin, apple pie, eggnog, and candy cane. Most of the Italian ices are made with fresh fruit. The most popular choices are lemon, the original flavor, and mango – one of Tim’s creations. Visitors to the Allendale store are welcome to try the self-serve frozen yogurt bar, which features 15 flavors of yogurt and over 60 toppings, including candies, fruits, and nuts. Vegans are welcome to try the sorbet, a delectable, non-dairy option. Treats also include ice cream pies, cupcakes, waffles (in the colder months), homemade chocolates, and chocolate-dipped strawberries, pretzels, and cookies. During the cold days, Clyde’s also serves coffee, espresso, hot chocolate, and tea. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Indoor and outdoor seating are available. Call (201) 962-2138 for more information.
