Interested individuals are invited to sign up for the Bergen County OEM’s spring 2013 CERT training program. Classes will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 27 and run weekly through April 10 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. The CERT program includes training in disaster preparedness, medical operations, fire suppression, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism awareness, and animal preparedness. This year, the program has been expanded to include training for County Animal Response Team certification. CART training will begin April 17 and continue weekly through May 15. Participation in CART is encouraged, but is not required as part of CERT training. Orientation offered to parents A kindergarten orientation for parents of children who will be entering kindergarten at Hillside School in September will be held on Thursday, March 7 in the Hillside School all-purpose room. The program, which will begin at 7 p.m., is designed to provide an overview of the Hillside kindergarten program and curriculum. (Snow date: March 14.) Kindergarten registration will take place March 18 for pupils whose last names begin with A through M, and March 19 for those with last names that begin with N through Z. Registration will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hillside School. (Snow dates for registration will be March 25 and 26.) The following documents must be presented at the time of registration: proof of child’s birth date, such as a birth or baptismal certificate or passport; a copy of the child’s immunization history; and proof of residency, which may include a copy of a lease or contract, driver’s license, utility bill, etc. In order to be eligible for kindergarten, children must be five years old by Oct. 1 of the year they are enrolling in school. All children entering kindergarten must have a physical dated after Jan. 1, 2013, and all immunizations must be up to date as required by the State of New Jersey. Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11. The meeting will be held in the library at Brookside School located at 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. Chamber plans meeting The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will meet at Louie’s Place, 29 West Allendale Avenue in Allendale, on Feb. 12. Allendale businesses are welcome to join. Lenten events, Holy Week services set Highlands Presbyterian Church will begin its Lenten observances. The church’s traditional soup and bread suppers will start on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the Ash Wednesday worship service. These suppers will continue every Wednesday at 6 p.m. through March 20, followed by the study series Living into Lent. The program was developed by Presbyterian theologian, educator, and author Donald McKim. Those interested in attending are asked to bring a soup bowl and spoon and join the group for warm fellowship. An offering will be taken up for the church’s mission treasury. During Holy Week, a seder will be held on Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 6 p.m. The Good Friday service on March 29, will be held at 8 p.m. On March 31, the Easter Sunday service will begin at 10 a.m. Highlands Presbyterian Church is located at 270 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale. He spent 28 years as a line officer, served for five years on the Advisory Board of the Bergen County Police & Fire Academy in the 1970s and started the 2nd Jr. Fire Brigade in Bergen County. He was also in charge of the Waldwick Fire Department Color Guard for over 30 years. A Korean War veteran serving in the 11th Airborne Division Paratrooper, where he attained the rank of corporal, Jaegge is currently president of the Waldwick Fire Department Exempt’s Association; vice president of the Waldwick Fire Department Relief Association and of the Bergen/Passaic Association; Alternate Executive County Committeeman of the New Jersey State Exempt’s Association and a member of the Bergen County Firemen’s Home Association.
