Archer plans AB&G Sale Archer United Methodist Church in Allendale is accepting donations of reusable items for its AB&G (Attic Basement and Garage) Sale. The church will accept donations of furniture, electronics, household goods, books, antiques and collectibles, artwork, jewelry, sporting equipment, tools, baby and children’s clothing, toys and games, and seasonal flowers and flat screen TVs from April 28 through May 3. A donation pickup service will be available through May 2. The following items are not being accepted: VHS tapes, vinyl records, computer hardware and software, printers, outdated electronic equipment, stereos and speakers, VCRs and DVD players, car seats, fake plants and trees, refrigerators, shoes, women’s and men’s clothing, skis and ski boots. Library to host Steve Henry The Lee Memorial Library, located at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale, will host a lecture with authorillustrator Steve Henry. “Picture This: An Illustrator’s Guide to Creating a Children’s Book from First Sketch to Publication” will be held April 23 at 7 p.m. This program was rescheduled due to a late winter snowstorm. Residents who attend will get a first look at Henry’s original art for his forthcoming book, “Happy Cat,” enjoy a question and answer session, and learn what it takes to get published in today’s market. Register for Junior Football & Cheerleading Registration for the Northern Highlands Junior Football Association’s tackle, flag, and cheerleading teams may be made online at http://leaguelineup.com/nhjfa. Registration will remain open until April 26. The tackle football season runs from Aug. 12 through the middle of November. Last year, all three “A” teams for the Bulldogs won their divisions and made the playoffs. Two of the teams played in the Super Bowl, and the Pee Wees won the championship. The program is sponsored by the USR Recreation Commission Harlem Wizards come to Allendale The Harlem Wizards will showcase their amazing basketball and comedic skills at the AFEE fundraiser set for Friday, May 10. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at Northern Highlands High School, 298 Hillside Avenue in Allendale. For 50 years, the Wizards have entertained families with their blend of dazzling basketball skills and laugh out loud humor. In this brand new AFEE fundraiser, area families are invited to participate in a night of trick hoops and alleyoops. The Wizards team, featuring Allendale’s Mighty Mike Simmel, will play against members of the Brookside/ Hillside community and encourage audience participation in a multitude of ways including an interactive half-time show and postgame autograph signing. AFEE seeks grant proposals The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc. is accepting grant proposals for programs that will enhance the educational experience for students in Allendale’s Hillside and Brookside schools. Proposals will be accepted through April 30. Parents, teachers, local business people, students, staff, and other members of the community are encouraged to participate by making proposals for projects or programs that are in keeping with the foundation’s mission to enhance and broaden the educational experience for public school students. Corps to celebrate 75th Anniversary The Allendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps will celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a Beefsteak Dinner fundraiser on May 4. The 7 p.m. event will be held at the Guardian Angel Church auditorium and will feature live performances by local bands including B SHARP, Red
Apple Rest, and The Mid-life Crisis Band. Allendale residents and friends, and members of emergency service organizations in surrounding towns are invited to attend. The event will include prize basket contests and an auction. Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased in advance. Participants are invited to bring their own beverages. Since its inception, The PhD Project has been responsible for the increase in the number of minority business professors from 294 to 1,172.
