Club seeks candidates for scholarship The Contemporary Club of Ho-Ho-Kus will award one $2,000 scholarship to a high school senior from Ho-HoKus who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, noteworthy extracurricular involvement, and meaningful community service. Candidates must have lived in HoHo-Kus for at least one year prior to the application date. Applications, along with a high school transcript, personal statement, a guidance counselor’s statement, and two references must be submitted by April 17. Applications are available at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, all local private school guidance departments, and at www.ccofhhk.com. Students may apply for Schwartz Scholarship All June 2013 high school graduates who attended eighth grade at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and are residents of Ho-Ho-Kus are invited to apply for the Jerry M. Schwartz Memorial Scholarship. This fund was established by the Schwartz family upon the death of Jerry Schwartz, who was a student at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. The family chose to honor Jerry by offering a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to an individual student. In order to be eligible, a student must be accepted to a two- or four-year college. The applicant must be a Ho- Ho-Kus graduate who exhibits evidence of being a caring, ethical individual, and received a passing grade in his or her high school program. Applications for the Jerry M. Schwartz Memorial Scholarship should be sent to: Superintendent Deborah Ferrara, Ho-Ho-Kus School District, 70 Lloyd Road, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423. The application requires a statement from the student explaining a life experience that had a positive impact and resulted in personal growth and positive change. Documentation of actual college expenses and a letter of recommendation are also required. Completed applications will be confidential and will be reviewed by the Ho-HoKus superintendent and a member of the Schwartz family. Applications are available at www.hohokus.org or the school office, and must be postmarked by May 1. Garden Club offers scholarships The Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club is currently accepting applications for its annual academic scholarship awards. The application deadline is May 1. To qualify, an applicant must be a current resident of Bergen County and an enrolled student who is studying or planning to study horticulture, botany, or environmental science. Returning students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships of up to $1,000 may be awarded. The Garden Club’s scholarship program was established in memory of Nina McNamara and Charles Anderson. Officer Sean Leonard of the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department visited with students at the Ho-Ho-Kus/Waldwick Cooperative Nursery School recently for a talk about safety and to discuss what the children should do if they ever get separated from their parents or caregivers. Officer Leonard also fingerprinted the students in Mrs. Garcia’s 4’s class and gave each child their fingerprint card as a souvenir. Hands-on demonstration Woyce to discuss Jersey Shore Author and photographer Kevin Woyce will present a history of the Jersey Shore to the Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors on Tuesday, May 28. The program will begin at 1 p.m. in the education building at the Hermitage located at 335 North Franklin Turnpike. Woyce will discuss the history of the Jersey Shore from the distant past of pirates and shipwrecks though today. Learn how towns got their unusual names and more. The seniors group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Hermitage Education Building. Ho-Ho-Kus HSA Scholarships available The Ho-Ho-Kus Home and School Association will accept applications for three HSA scholarships through April 19. The scholarships, up to the amount of $1,500, will be awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and community service. Graduating high school seniors who reside in Ho-HoKus and who have attended the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School for at least one year are eligible to apply. Applications are available at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall at 333 Warren Avenue, the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School office on Lloyd Road, and the Northern Highlands Regional High School office on Hillside Avenue in Allendale. Foundation announces fundraiser The Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation will hold its annual Dinner Dance and Auction on Saturday, April 20 at the Ridgewood Country Club. The event celebrates the 20th year of the organization, which has awarded over $1 million in grants to enhance the educational experience of children at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School.
