Members of both major political parties were required to file their nominating petitions by last week’s deadline. Independent candidates will not appear on the primary ballot; they have until the date of the primary to announce their candidacy in the November general election. Biographies of the candidates who responded to our reporters’ requests are included below. That information will be included in the May 29 edition. Allendale Allendale Republicans Ari Bernstein and Stephen Sasso, and Democrat Carol Sheehan have filed for their parties’ respective primaries, which will be held June 4. Although there will be no contest this spring, all three candidates will appear on the November general election ballot, when voters will be asked to select two of the three candidates as their representatives to the borough council. Allendale Councilwoman Member Susan LaMonica, a retired human resources director, decided not to seek reelection this year. Her spot on the June 4 primary ballot will be filled by Sasso, who is a member of the Allendale Planning Board and treasurer of the Allendale Republican Club. Bernstein is a two-term incumbent councilman. He is a graduate of Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale and is currently an attorney with offices in Franklin Lakes. Sheehan is a member and secretary of the borough’s planning board. She is a supporter of the Field of Dreams at Northern Highlands Regional High School. Ho-Ho-Kus There will be no contest in this year’s Republican primary, where incumbent Councilmen Phil Rorty and Kevin Shea have filed for the two available seats on the council. No Democrats have filed this year. Rorty is now completing his first term on the council. He has served as chairman of the Ho-Ho-Kus Republican County Committee, the organization responsible for recommending appointees to the council when members of the governing body step down, leaving unexpired terms. He has also been president of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the borough planning board. He has resided in the borough for all but seven years of his life. He was educated at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and subsequently graduated from Ridgewood High School and from Nichols College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
