This 7:30 p.m. meeting will be held at the Ho-Ho-Kus Community Church at 400 Warren Avenue. Oostveen will present tips for creating a backyard habitat for birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and hummingbirds. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Oostveen studied gardening at Rutgers and has her own garden design business. Her program will include information on how to deter deer, groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks. Students may apply for Schwartz Scholarship All June 2013 high school graduates who attended eighth grade at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and are residents of Ho-Ho-Kus are invited to apply for the Jerry M. Schwartz Memorial Scholarship. This fund was established by the Schwartz family upon the death of Jerry Schwartz, who was a student at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. The family chose to honor Jerry by offering a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to an individual student. In order to be eligible, a student must be accepted to a two- or four-year college. The applicant must be a HoHo-Kus graduate who exhibits evidence of being a caring, ethical individual, and received a passing grade in his or her high school program. Applications for the Jerry M. Schwartz Memorial Scholarship should be sent to: Superintendent Deborah Ferrara, Ho-Ho-Kus School District, 70 Lloyd Road, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423. The application requires a statement from the student explaining a life experience that had a positive impact and resulted in personal growth and positive change. Documentation of actual college expenses and a letter of recommendation are also required. Completed applications will be confidential and will be reviewed by the Ho-HoKus superintendent and a member of the Schwartz family. Applications are available at www.hohokus.org or the school office, and must be postmarked by May 1. Knights host Pasta Dinner The Saint Luke’s Knights of Columbus will host a Pasta Dinner on Saturday, April 13. The event will be held at 6 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall at the corner of Smith and Prospect streets in Waldwick. The membership will provide a menu that includes all-you-can-eat pasta, meatballs, garlic bread, salad, soda, coffee, and dessert. Beverages will be available in the lounge for an additional cost. Ho-Ho-Kus HSA Scholarships available The Ho-Ho-Kus Home and School Association will accept applications for three HSA scholarships through April 19. The scholarships, up to the amount of $1,500, will be awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and community service. Graduating high school seniors who reside in Ho-HoKus and who have attended the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School for at least one year are eligible to apply. Applications are available at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall at 333 Warren Avenue, the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School office on Lloyd Road, and the Northern Highlands Regional High School office on Hillside Avenue in Allendale. For more information, call Margie Wilderotter at (201) 739-5030. Club host Bridge Party benefit The Woman’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus will host its annual Bridge Party fundraiser on Friday, April 12. This event will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Waldwick United Methodist Church at 25 Franklin Turnpike. The party will feature homemade desserts, coffee, tea, a prize basket fundraiser, and door prizes. Tickets are $15, and may be reserved by calling (201) 444-9389. Five achieve Eagle Scout status Kevin Rickenberg, Corey Bellezza, Michael Menakis, Nicholas Hewitt, and Harold Hayward IV. Ho-Ho-Kus Boy Scouts Kevin Rickenberg, Corey Bellezza, Michael Menakis, Nicholas Hewitt, and Harold S. Hayward IV achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. They were recognized at the Eagle Court of Honor on March 30 at the Ho-Ho-Kus Community Church. Rickenberg began as a Tiger Cub and moved through the ranks to Eagle Scout. His leadership positions within the troop have included patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, troop guide, and den chief. He was a member of several winning Iditarod teams. Rickenberg is a member of the Order of the Arrow, where he served as troop representative, active charter member, and camp promoter. He earned 26 merit badges on his way to Eagle. He has received the Hazel B. Flavelle Campership award and the John Barnett Award. His Eagle project was the renovation of the library, consistory meeting room, and hallway of the First Reformed Church of Hawthorne, where he is a member. The storage area was demolished and new walls were built with doors and shelving. He furnished the renovated area with new couches, a coffee table, TV, and video equipment. A total of 178 hours were spent on the project. Rickenberg is a senior at Northern Highlands High School, where he has been a member of the cross country team all four years, and is active in the Italian Club and the Future Statesman Club. He has been captain of the HoHo-Kus Junior Firefighters and now is a probationary fire fighter. He will continue to be active in Troop 54 serving as an assistant scoutmaster. Bellezza is a life-long resident of Ho-Ho-Kus. He joined Cub Scouts in first grade. As a member of Troop 54, he has served as quartermaster and patrol leader. He became a member of the Order of the Arrow and attended camp NoBe-Bo-Sco for five consecutive years, two of which were with Westwood Troop 54. He went twice to Floodwood Mountain Reservation and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The second Philmont trip was with the Allendale (continued on page 21)
