Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 22, 2013 Glen Rock Democratic write-ins assure November contest by John Koster Glen Rock Democratic write-in candidates Amy Martin and Sean Brennan will not be on their party’s primary ballot in June, but expect to be on the general election ballot in November. Their decision to run means the fall Glen Rock Borough Council race will be contested. Martin, active in the Home and School Associations, and Brennan, a 13-year-resident with three children, announced last week that they were seeking write-in votes for the June primary and a place on the November ballot. Write-in votes can be serious in Glen Rock, and have actually put Glen Rock Board of Education candidates in seats when there were not enough ballot candidates to make up a full slate. “Glen Rock is full of creative, talented, and caring people who don’t currently have a voice on the council,” Brennan said in a prepared statement last week. The Republicans, however, are offering Michael O’Hagan, an incumbent who is widely popular for his advocacy of traffic and pedestrian safety, and Mary Jane Surrago, who is active with the Glen Rock Ambulance Corps and patriotic events, and a regular at other public events. Glen Rock, once regarded as solidly Republican, elected one Democrat, Howard Bookbinder, to the council for one term in the 1980s and later elected an Independent, Richard Hahn, as mayor. For several years, the council had three Democratic members and three Republican members under Republican Mayor John van Keuren. Glen Rock unexpectedly returned to a solid Republican council when Council Member Joan Orseck opted to run as a Republican after having won two terms as a Democrat. Orseck said she wanted to continue working with the present council to try to control spending without cutting services. Mark McCullough, the Glen Rock Democratic Chairman, won a term on the council but was not reelected despite several bids. The Democratic and Republican council members have usually cooperated with each other on local issues, notably cost control in government, which was an issue for both parties. Latin students earn top scores Glen Rock High School students demonstrated their dedication to the study of the classics as they achieved high scores in both the NJJCL State Certamen finals and on the annual National Latin Exam. On the National Latin Exam, participating students garnered a total of 46 awards. Gold summa cum laude was earned for Latin II by Andrew Peiser (perfect score), (continued on page 8) At Certamen 2013 (the Latin Quiz Bowl,) students took first place for the Northern Region in the statewide event held at Princeton University.
